The Journey

My name is Samantha Brink, and I’m from South Africa. I’m currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh.

I previously completed a BA in English Studies and later obtained a TEFL qualification, which allowed me to teach English online for several years. Through that experience, I became increasingly interested in how digital learning environments are designed and how technology can meaningfully expand access to education.

Pursuing further study in Digital Education felt like a natural next step as it allows me to combine my background in education with my growing interest in learning design and educational technology, particularly in contexts where access to quality education is uneven.

Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship Details

I was awarded the Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship to study at the University of Edinburgh. The scholarship covers full tuition fees and made postgraduate study financially possible for me.

It was both encouraging and humbling to receive such competitive support.

Educational Background

My undergraduate degree in English strengthened my research, writing, and analytical thinking skills, all of which have been essential at the postgraduate level.

In addition, my professional experience as an online educator provided practical insight into learner engagement, accessibility, and curriculum design. This combination of academic and professional experience prepared me well for applying to and succeeding in a Digital Education program.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Edinburgh?

I carefully researched programs that aligned with my long-term goals. I looked at course content, faculty expertise, and how the program approached digital learning from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

I also spent time refining my personal statement to ensure it clearly connected my background, current work, and future ambitions.

How Did You Find Information About the Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship and the University of Edinburgh?

I relied primarily on official university websites and reputable scholarship platforms. I made sure to read eligibility requirements thoroughly and kept track of deadlines to stay organized throughout the process.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship?

For the Commonwealth Scholarship, it was important to demonstrate both academic readiness and a clear commitment to contributing to development in my home country.

I focused on presenting a coherent narrative: how my academic background and professional experience had prepared me for the program, and how the degree would enable me to contribute meaningfully in the future.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because it presented a clear sense of direction. My academic history, professional experience, and long-term goals were closely aligned, and I articulated a realistic plan for impact rather than broad or abstract ambitions.

What Would You Have Done Differently?

If I were to go through the process again, I would begin even earlier and allow more time for drafting and revising my essays. Strong applications benefit from reflection and refinement.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply?

Start early, stay organized, and read the scholarship criteria carefully.

Most importantly, ensure your application tells a cohesive story.

Although my program is delivered through distance learning, the university provides structured academic support, clear communication channels, and access to resources that make international participation manageable and inclusive.

What Did You Pursue After the Scholarship?
