The Journey
My name is Ruya Almushwat from Libya, and I’m a 24/25 Chevener with a passion for law, human rights, and governance, especially in conflict areas like my own country. This is what drove me towards an MSc in International Relations and International Law, allowing me to combine academic research with real-life engagement in human rights, migration, and civil society work.
Chevening Scholarship Details
I was awarded the Chevening Scholarship to pursue my MSc in International Relations and International Law at the University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom. Chevening is a fully funded scholarship supported by the UK government
Educational Background
My previous background includes a BA in Linguistics and Literature from the University of Tripoli Al Ahlia, where I graduated with honours at 93.87%, ranking first among all schools for three consecutive semesters. These studies strengthened my analytical thinking and research skills. Alongside my studies, I worked as a teacher and later engaged in civil society and humanitarian work with various NGO’s, including the DRC and UNFCCC, which helped me connect theory with real-world challenges and motivated me to pursue postgraduate education in international law.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Aberdeen?
I began my scholarship journey by taking an online TOEFL test since no test centres were available. I prepared by practicing through online mock tests and passed with a high score. Afterwards, I started applying for universities at a really early stage, listing all potential institutions and their pros and cons, eventually cutting the list to just 5 institutions. I researched universities by reviewing course structures and dissertation opportunities, particularly those with strong programs in international law and global affairs. I then chose the University of Aberdeen, which was one of the only universities offering a joint MSc programme with the School of Law and social sciences.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Chevening Scholarship?
Preparing for Chevening required careful planning. I spent significant time thinking genuinely about my personal statement to clearly demonstrate my leadership experience, career goals, and commitment to contributing to my home country. This required me to be utterly honest and reflect on what I wanted and was able to realistically achieve.
How is (was) Your Experience at the University of Aberdeen?
My experience at Aberdeen was life-changing. I truly saw the world through a different lens, not only through the incredible professors and courses but also through people. The diversity of my peers encouraged me to look at things differently. The institution's location near the Scottish Highlands added to the experience.
How Do You Rate the University of Aberdeen Academically and Why?
The teaching quality, access to academic support, and emphasis on research excellence were outstanding. I graduated with distinction and was awarded the George and Lilian Adam Smith Prize for the highest dissertation performance in my program.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I would say my application stood out because of the strong link between my academic goals, professional experience, and long-term commitment to Libya. I was able to demonstrate leadership, consistent academic excellence, and meaningful engagement in humanitarian work, highlighting how the scholarship would allow me to meaningfully contribute to my community and region.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would have tried to reach out and ask for help from my peers and mentors, as relying solely on myself was really stressful. It’s okay to ask for advice from those around you!
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
As cliché as it sounds, I have to say the most important thing is to believe in yourself. Before you can convince others as to why you are a good investment, you have to be wholly convinced yourself.
