The Journey
I am Rubaiyana Taskin, and I come from a small yet vibrant city in northeastern India – Guwahati. I pursued a Bachelor of Technology degree in Civil Engineering from Assam Engineering College and went on to complete my Master of Technology in Environmental Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar, India.
From a young age, I have been deeply inspired by the beauty and complexities of the natural world. The diverse elements of nature have always captivated my curiosity. Growing up in a place blessed with a luscious and abundant environment, I developed a strong desire to work towards a greater cause. This passion led me to specialize in Environmental Engineering, with the aim of contributing to the remediation of emerging contaminants from the environment.
My current research focuses on the remediation of environmental microplastics, a challenge of growing global concern through which I strive to make a small yet meaningful impact in advancing environmental sustainability.
DAAD KOSPIE Scholarship Details
In July 2024, I was awarded the esteemed DAAD KOSPIE Scholarship. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD; German: Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), founded in 1925, is the largest German organization supporting international academic cooperation.
The DAAD KOSPIE program offers selected students from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) the opportunity to undertake project work as part of their Master’s thesis under the guidance of a German professor at one of the TU9 Technical Universities. I was privileged to be accepted to conduct my research at the prestigious Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany, under the joint supervision of Prof. Brigitte Helmreich and Prof. Remya Neelancherry.
The DAAD KOSPIE Scholarship is fully funded, providing a monthly stipend of 992 euros, along with health, accident, and liability insurance. It also covers travel allowances and a one-time research allowance. Additionally, it includes a four- to six-week German language course at the host university, designed to help scholarship holders integrate into the country and ensure a smooth transition.
Educational Background
I believe that a strong foundation in both Mathematics and Biology has significantly supported my specialization in Environmental Engineering. It enabled me to better understand various biological systems and the forces governing them. Coupled with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, it has further strengthened my understanding of fundamental concepts related to environmental processes, such as hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, and geotechnical interactions. Furthermore, my cultivated interest in creative writing and public speaking has enhanced my ability to express my ideas clearly and contribute effectively to the field of research.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Institutions?
The preparation for this scholarship began well before the actual application process. Since the primary criterion for shortlisting was the CGPA of my Master’s program, it was crucial to consistently maintain a high academic record. As this was a research-based scholarship, I carefully explored various research areas that interested me. After identifying my area of focus, I conducted detailed research on professors working in those fields. I thoroughly studied their previous work and research contributions that aligned with my interests. Following this, I proactively reached out to specific professors to discuss the possibility of working under their supervision. This process involved extensive interviews and interactions with several professors from TU9 universities. I was fortunate to be accepted by two TU9 universities; however, I chose to join the Technical University of Munich (TUM), as the research area there was something I truly loved and felt deeply connected to.
Finally, when both my research interests and that of my German supervisors aligned, I was selected to work under their joint supervision. In parallel, I also focused on fulfilling the test score requirements for the scholarship. One of these was the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), where I secured an All India Rank of 448. I believe this score significantly strengthened my application for the scholarship.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to DAAD KOSPIE Scholarship?
One of the most crucial steps in applying for the scholarship was understanding its specific requirements. I discovered this scholarship about a year before the application process began, which gave me ample time to prepare and align my profile accordingly. I focused on consistently maintaining strong academic performance, while also cultivating a keen interest in research. To deepen my understanding of research methodologies, I attended various seminars and conferences, which provided valuable insights into what meaningful research truly involves.
Performing well in standardized tests, such as the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), also contributed substantially to strengthening my application. In addition, developing strong writing skills, particularly in drafting official manuscripts such as research proposals and statements of purpose, played a crucial role in effectively communicating my ideas and research interests to potential supervisors.
Beyond academic achievements, the scholarship demands a genuine understanding of research practices and commitment to scholarly work. Interacting with experienced seniors and knowledgeable academicians greatly helped me gain a clearer perspective and better prepare myself for this opportunity.
Along the way, I was grateful to receive the Teaching Assistant (TA) Fellowship at IIT Bhubaneswar and the Special Merit Scholarship by the Government of Assam, India. These opportunities, which recognized consistent academic efforts and a zeal for learning, encouraged me further and helped me build a stronger foundation for the DAAD KOSPIE Scholarship.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe what made my application stand out was the authenticity of my interest in the research area, as well as the novelty of the field I focused on. The topic I worked on — the remediation of environmental microplastics — is an emerging field that is gaining increasing global attention. I believe DAAD truly values and recognizes novel research areas, and encourages young researchers to explore such topics with the potential for real-world impact.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Although I’m happy with the entire application process and the experience it gave me, I believe applying for any scholarship is a journey with its ups and downs. It’s important to handle the lows with patience and confidence in yourself. If I had to go through the process again, I would focus on embracing those challenges more calmly and not stress so much during difficult times. The journey itself is just as valuable as the outcome, offering insights and personal growth along the way.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
It is crucial to first have a detailed understanding of the specific requirements of the scholarship you are applying for. Each scholarship has its own set of criteria, and it is essential to familiarize yourself with them in order to meet those expectations. Identifying the right scholarship isn’t just important — it’s your first wise investment in yourself and your future.
Secondly, I cannot emphasize enough that while your academic performance and research aptitude are important, it is equally crucial to draft meaningful motivation letters, research proposals, and manuscripts. These documents are key to presenting your ideas clearly and effectively.
Lastly, while networking may not be a direct requirement for any scholarship, it can play a significant role in your journey. There’s always something to learn from others, and hearing about their experiences can provide valuable insights. Connecting with academicians, professionals, seniors, and even colleagues in related fields can provide meaningful guidance to help you refine your skills and address any gaps in your knowledge. Constructive feedback is an important part of growth and development.
Ultimately, Believe in yourself. Perseverance and Faith can take you a long way!
