The Journey
I am a lawyer, researcher, and community organizer from India with over three years of experience working within public institutions and beyond. My journey has taken me through some of the most important legal spaces in the country, including the Supreme Court of India and the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), which is the apex body for legal services delivery established by an Act of Parliament.
However, the work that has most significantly shaped my aspirations and motivated me to pursue higher education was my role as the convenor of the Legal Aid and Awareness Committee at the National Law University, Jodhpur. Alongside my close friend and co-convenor, Adya Garg (now a corporate lawyer in London), I had the privilege of leading the establishment of a community library and a computer lab to serve underprivileged communities in a village in rural Rajasthan. It was a deeply rewarding experience to witness the tangible impact of our efforts on the ground, fostering access to legal knowledge and technology where it was most needed.
In the course of this work, I met Anurag Bhaskar, the former Director of the Centre for Research and Planning in the Supreme Court, a Harvard graduate whose intellect, strategic thinking, and mentorship deeply influenced me. His guidance helped me broaden my perspective on the intersection of law, justice, and society, and it was through his mentorship that I began seriously considering pursuing an LLM from a prestigious institution like SOAS. This experience ignited my passion for continuing my education and work at a global scale, where I can build on these foundations and contribute to meaningful, systemic change. This is why I am pursuing my Master's in Law.
Chevening Scholarship Details
I have received a prestigious Chevening Scholarship, which is given by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Government of the United Kingdom. Scholarship is very generous, which covers your tuition fee, living stipend, airfare, and visa fee, along with the NHS fee in the UK. I have not calculated the amount, but it is a very, very generous scholarship.
Educational Background
I hold a BA LLB (Constitutional Law Honours) from National Law University, Jodhpur, with a CGPA of 7.65/10. While I can’t fully gauge how much my undergraduate degree directly prepared me for pursuing an LLM, I am certain that my more than two and a half years of hands-on experience working with courts, coupled with the academic writing I engaged in during my time at university, have been invaluable. Through contributing to both national and international forums, engaging with academics, and taking on various initiatives, I have gained insights and skills that have significantly contributed to my growth and have prepared me for the next step in my academic journey, which I am currently pursuing.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to SOAS University of London?
Understand where your true interests lie, because that’s what really matters. A one-year master’s course passes by quickly, so it’s crucial to choose a path that truly resonates with you. It might sound unconventional, but I’d encourage you to pick a university that promotes interdisciplinary learning, one that doesn’t just ask you to focus on a single area in isolation. Engaging with diverse perspectives is key, as we all come from different backgrounds and have unique worldviews. Take the time to research the course and faculty on the university’s website. It’s the best place to understand the details and the process. Ultimately, choose what aligns with your passion, and make the most of this unique opportunity."
How Did You Find Information About the Chevening Scholarship and SOAS University of London?
Most scholarship opportunities, including Chevening, Commonwealth, and Fulbright, are actively shared on social media. You can follow their official social media handles to stay updated on new opportunities. Additionally, many scholars who have received these scholarships often share insights about the application process and admission tips. However, I’d still recommend going directly to the official website of the respective scholarship or university; it’s the most reliable source for accurate information.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
Yes, I appeared for the IELTS. The resources available online were incredibly helpful. YouTube and the official IELTS website (ielts.org) both offer practice tests that proved to be very useful in preparing for the exam."
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Chevening Scholarship?
I applied to Chevening and universities quite last-minute, but I learned a few key things along the way. First and foremost, be genuine. In your application essay, talk about the work you’ve actually done; it’s something you know best, and authenticity always stands out. I don’t believe in the idea of "faking it until you make it." That approach is short-term and superficial, like a mask that eventually falls off. Instead, carefully read the essay questions and reflect on your personal journey. Be honest and thoughtful about what makes you unique, why you want to pursue a master’s, and how it aligns with your career goals. If you can answer these questions clearly and genuinely, you’re on the right path. Focus on these reflections and build your application around them everything else will fall into place.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe what made my application stand out was the diversity of my work experience, coupled with my genuine passion for the field. I’ve had the opportunity to work across different legal and community-oriented roles, which allowed me to bring a unique perspective to the table. Additionally, I believe that being genuine and authentic requires no extra effort on my part; that’s one of my greatest strengths. My advice would be to simply be yourself and apply. Authenticity shines through naturally, and that’s what truly makes a difference.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Start early and plan your application process carefully. If you're working while applying, make it a priority and treat it as the most important item on your to-do list. Above all, don’t let self-doubt take over, especially if you come from a vulnerable or oppressed background. It’s natural to feel unsure, but don’t let those doubts overshadow your intellect and potential. Remind yourself that you belong, you have every right to be where you aspire to be.
Don’t fear rejection; use it as a chance to learn and prepare again. Most importantly, build a support network. The application process can be overwhelming, so having friends and family who support you can make all the difference. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help when you need it; whether it's for feedback, encouragement, or guidance. Write emails, follow up, and keep pushing forward
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
As I mentioned earlier, being genuine is key. When applying for a master’s, clearly articulate why you want to pursue it, how the Chevening Scholarship will help you achieve your goals, and what you plan to do after completing your studies. Focus on clarity, authenticity, honesty, transparency, and, of course, hard work. These are the qualities that will make your application stand out.
