The Journey

Hi! I’m Radhi Kalifa, a current final-year student at the University of Hyogo, Global Business Course Undergraduate program in Japan, with a MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) fully-funded scholarship. I am from Jakarta, Indonesia, and have developed my interest in business ever since junior high school. I spent my high school days creating my own business and gaining practical knowledge from it, and found that the program that the University of Hyogo has resonates well with me. I have always wanted to start my journey in Japan due to its massive scholarship opportunities and its interesting cultural aspects.

MEXT Scholarship Details

MEXT fully-funded scholarship covers almost everything for my 4-year studies in Japan. It includes a round-trip flight ticket, tuition fee, and a monthly allowance with the amount of ¥120,000. The scholarship requires me to keep my GPA above the given standards, and I am allowed by MEXT to have other scholarships as well.

Educational Background

I was majoring in science during my high school with an average score of 91.2 out of 100. My major is the complete opposite of what I studied in university, where it connects more towards social science.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Institutions and the MEXT Scholarship?

I’ve done my research, starting from my country of destination and the type of scholarship that would fit my needs. Creating my own database to prepare for documents and track my applications is necessary for me to do my work effectively during the application process. I prepared for my TOEFL IBT thoroughly by having an intensive course. To ensure that I put 100% on each of my essays and cover letters, I did multiple checking measures, such as proofreading from friends and family, and looking for online resources.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Japanese?

At the University of Hyogo, the Global Business Course is fully conducted in English, but there are opportunities for international students to learn Japanese through language classes that are offered in the course. We are also supported by the campus for any matters that involve Japanese, such as health insurance or any other government-related services. It is not necessary to be able to speak Japanese, and it won’t affect your GPA or performance in class, but it is highly recommended to enjoy your studying abroad experience to the fullest as you can immerse to the culture even more.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically Not Knowing Japanese?

Nothing academically, but it will affect your daily life in Japan. Anything that is outside the scope of the university will require you to be able to speak Japanese, such as when shopping and traveling.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I tailored my essay and cover letter by matching what the program offers and my idea and plan that I aim for. What matters most to me is to stay up-to-date on current events. I applied for my program in 2022, and the topic that I researched during that time was the metaverse. It was an interesting topic for me to explore, and what matters most is to have a complete understanding of your topic for your interview. During the selection process, especially in the interview, I always try to give positive energy and show cultural understanding of Japan. I studied simple terms, such as the way you call your professor in Japanese and manners in Japanese society. Most importantly, be confident!

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

Nothing in particular, but it would be great to be able to practice my interview even more.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Do extensive research, and please don’t use AI for your works such as an essay or interview. It is common for scholars to have difficulties during their studies and with the responsibilities that come from having a scholarship. Make sure to enjoy yourself during the process, as it will improve your results as well!
