The Journey

My name is Rabiu Kabo Alhassan. I am a results-oriented and enthusiastic Agricultural Associate with a major in Soil Science. I have over five years of experience working with various agricultural institutions, primarily focusing on research and development. I have studied in multiple countries, earning my Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Soil Science) from Kano University of Science and Technology in Nigeria. I then pursued two Master's degrees: one in Soil Science from the University of Agriculture in Cracow, Poland, and another in Soil Science and Plant Nutrition from Ondokuz Mayis University in Samsun, Turkey. I was also a recipient of the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Degree Grant, which provided me with the opportunity to study in different countries and gain international experience. Currently, I am serving as a REMTECH Europe Ambassador, promoting innovative technologies and solutions in environmental management.

Educational Background

Before joining the Erasmus Mundus program, I completed my Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Soil Science) at Kano University of Science and Technology in Nigeria. This academic background provided me with a solid foundation in soil science, agronomy, and research methodologies, which prepared me well for the multi-country experience of the Erasmus Mundus program. My undergraduate studies equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in a diverse and international academic environment.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the University of Agriculture in Cracow and Other Institutions?

To prepare for applying to the institutions, I thoroughly researched the programs and their requirements. I gathered all necessary documents, such as transcripts, recommendation letters, and a well-crafted personal statement. I also reached out to current students and alumni of Erasmus Mundus to gain insights into the application process and the program itself. Additionally, I ensured that my application highlighted my academic achievements, research experience, and professional background.

How Did you Prepare to Apply for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?

I applied for multiple scholarships, including the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Degree Grant. To prepare, I carefully reviewed the eligibility criteria and application requirements for each scholarship. I tailored my application materials to emphasize my academic excellence, research experience, and commitment to my field of study. I chose the Erasmus Mundus program because of its prestigious reputation, the opportunity to study in multiple countries, and the comprehensive support it offers to students. The competition was intense, but I believe my strong academic record, relevant research experience, and clear articulation of my career goals made my application stand out.

Could You Briefly Discuss the Erasmus Mundus Program You Pursued and the Specific Field of Study It Focused On?

The Erasmus Mundus program I pursued focused on Soil Science and Plant Nutrition. This program provided an in-depth understanding of soil health, nutrient management, and sustainable agricultural practices. It included coursework, research projects, and practical training in various aspects of soil science and plant nutrition. The program's multi-country structure allowed me to gain diverse perspectives and experiences, enhancing my knowledge and skills in the field.

How Did the Cost of Living Vary Across the Countries You Studied In?

The cost of living varied significantly across the countries I studied in. Turkey was relatively affordable, with lower costs for accommodation, food, and transportation. Poland was also reasonably priced, though slightly higher than Turkey. Managing finances required careful budgeting and planning. I made use of student discounts, shared accommodation, and cooked my meals to save costs. The Erasmus Mundus scholarship provided financial support, which helped cover tuition fees and living expenses.

Did You Face Any Language Barriers, and if So, How Did You Overcome Them?

Yes, I faced some language barriers, especially in daily interactions outside the academic environment. The language of instruction for my courses was English, which remained consistent across the countries. To overcome language barriers, I took language classes, used language learning apps, and practiced with locals. Engaging with fellow students and participating in cultural activities also helped improve my language skills and adapt to the new environments.

Would You Recommend the Erasmus Mundus Program to Others?

Absolutely! The Erasmus Mundus program offers a unique and enriching experience, providing high-quality education, international exposure, and valuable networking opportunities. My advice to prospective applicants is to thoroughly research the programs, prepare a strong application, and be open to embracing new cultures and experiences. The program is competitive, so highlighting your academic achievements, research experience, and career goals is crucial.

Looking Back, Would You Have Done Anything Differently During Your Time in the Program?

Looking back, I would have made more effort to learn the local languages before arriving in each country. This would have helped me integrate more quickly and make the most of my time there. Additionally, I would have sought out more networking opportunities and collaborations with fellow students and faculty members to further enhance my academic and professional growth.
