The Journey
My name is Priyal Gupta, and I am from India. I am currently pursuing my higher education in South Korea as a Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) recipient. I have an academic background in business-related studies and professional experience in marketing and sales, which I gained while working from December 2020 to March 2024.
My interest in this field developed through both my academic journey and my work experience, where I learned how businesses operate in competitive and global environments. Over time, I realized the importance of gaining international exposure, strategic thinking skills, and a global perspective, which motivated me to pursue further education abroad.
I chose to continue my studies in Korea because of its strong academic system, innovative learning environment, and emphasis on practical and analytical thinking. Studying here allows me to grow not only academically, but also personally, by experiencing a new culture and education system while preparing for a global career.

Educational Background
I have done my undergraduate in Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Delhi with 8.37 CGPA. My bachelor’s degree had briefly touch based most of the courses I am studying for FMBA at Sungkyunkwan University in Korea, which helped me a lot with the basic understanding of many courses.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Sungkyunkwan University?
My preparation started with clarity and self-research. I first understood why I wanted to study abroad, and why Korea specifically. Once that was clear, I focused on finding institutions that matched my academic background, future goals, and personal interests.
I carefully reviewed university websites to understand:
- Program structure and course content
- Language of instruction
- Eligibility criteria
- University strengths and reputation
I also spent a lot of time preparing my documents, especially my study plan and personal statement. I made sure my application clearly reflected my academic journey, professional experience in marketing and sales, and how studying in Korea would help me grow both personally and professionally. I revised my documents multiple times to make them honest, structured, and aligned with the scholarship’s goals.
How Did You Find Information About the GKS Scholarships and Sungkyunkwan University?
Most of my information came from official sources and real student experiences. I regularly checked:
- Official scholarship websites (especially for GKS)
- University websites
- Embassy and education-related announcements
In addition, I learned a lot from YouTube videos, blogs, and social media where current scholars and international students shared their experiences. Listening to real stories helped me understand the application process better and avoid common mistakes.
Later, after becoming more familiar with the process myself, I also started creating content to help other students, which further deepened my understanding of scholarships and institutions.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
I took an English language proficiency test as part of my application requirements. My preparation was mainly self-driven. I focused on improving my overall English skills rather than memorizing answers.
Since I had an academic and professional background where English was regularly used, I focused more on familiarizing myself with the test format and timing rather than starting from scratch.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Global Korea Scholarship?
My preparation for the scholarship was very intentional and structured. I started by deeply understanding what the scholarship was looking for—not just academic performance, but also motivation, cultural adaptability, extra-curriculars, and long-term goals.
I spent a lot of time working on my study plan and personal statement, making sure they clearly showed:
- My academic background
- My professional experience in marketing and sales
- My genuine interest in Korea and global exposure
- How the scholarship aligned with my future goals
I also carefully prepared all required documents in advance and gave myself enough time to revise them multiple times. Instead of rushing, I focused on making my application authentic and well-aligned with the scholarship’s vision. I took almost 3 months in order to prepare everything in advance, so when the deadlines are announced, I am well prepared already for most of the stuff and only need to make a few changes if required.
How is (was) Your Experience at Sungkyunkwan University?
My experience at the institution has been challenging but very rewarding. Studying in a new country pushed me out of my comfort zone, not only academically, but also culturally and personally.
The academic environment encourages independent thinking, discussion, and critical analysis, which helped me grow a lot as a student. At the same time, living and studying in Korea has been a major personal growth experience, teaching me adaptability, patience, and confidence.
What makes SKK GSB special for me isn’t just one thing; it’s the balance. The balance between rigorous academics and real-world learning. Between professional growth and personal connections. Between structured learning and fun, memorable moments.
SKK GSB isn’t just shaping me academically; it’s helping me grow as a confident, informed, and globally minded individual. And that, to me, is what makes this journey truly unforgettable.
How Does Sungkyunkwan University Support International Students?
SKK GSB is such a supportive place, specifically for international students. The thing that stands out to me the most as an International student is Networking where SKK GSB truly shines. With numerous networking events, industry talks, and guest lectures, students get countless opportunities to meet professionals, alumni, and leaders from different sectors. These events don’t feel forced or formal; they feel like genuine opportunities to learn, connect, and grow. Over time, you start building a network that feels both professional and personal.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean?
Most of my academic classes are conducted in English, especially core and major-related courses. However, living in Korea means that daily life and administrative interactions often require basic Korean, which becomes an important part of the experience.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically Not Knowing Korean?
Academically, students usually do not face major problems, since many programs, especially for international students, are taught in English.
However, not knowing the local language can be challenging in daily life, group work, or informal interactions. Learning basic Korean greatly improves communication, confidence, and overall experience, even if it is not academically mandatory.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my application stood out because of its clarity and authenticity. I clearly connected: My academic background, My professional experience, My clear motivation to study in Korea, along with My long-term goals and extra-curricular activities
Instead of trying to impress, I focused on being honest, reflective, and purposeful. My study plan showed clear direction, and my personal statement highlighted not just achievements, but also growth and intent.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were applying again, I would:
- Start preparing even earlier
- Seek more feedback on my documents from mentors or seniors
- Begin learning the local language more seriously before arrival
While my preparation was good, having even more time and guidance, especially on the MBA at my target university, would have reduced stress and improved confidence.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My biggest advice would be:
Start early and stay organized, don’t panic or overthink, Rely on official sources only for information. Focus on your story, not comparisons, and be honest with yourself and the process.
Don’t underestimate the importance of the study plan and personal statement. These are the most important documents and can make or break your application.
Lastly, believe that your background and experiences are valuable. Scholarships are not only looking for perfect profiles, but for students with purpose, potential, and sincerity.
