Master’s Public Health in Epidemiology AAUW Fellow Prathiba Annam from India Shares Her Journey of Studying in the United States

My name is Prathiba Annam, and I am originally from India. I am a graduate of a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I currently work as a Clinical Research Coordinator at Agile Clinical Research Trials in Georgia, USA. With a background in pharmacy and a strong passion for public health research, I chose to pursue epidemiology to understand disease patterns, design evidence-based interventions, and improve health outcomes. My goal is to bridge clinical research and public health, particularly focusing on women’s health and underserved populations.

AAUW International Fellowship Details

I was honored to receive the prestigious American Association of University Women (AAUW) International Master’s/First Professional Degree Fellowship for the 2023–2024 academic year. This highly competitive fellowship awarded me $20,000, which significantly supported my graduate education and research endeavors. I was especially grateful to be the only recipient from India that year and the only student in the MPH Epidemiology specialization, which made the recognition feel even more meaningful and motivating.

Educational Background

I hold a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree, which provided me with a strong foundation in clinical research, therapeutics, pharmacology, patient care, biostatistics, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. I gained hands-on experience in clinical research methodology, patient-centered interventions, and statistical analysis using SPSS. I graduated with an overall GPA of 3.63.

I then pursued a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where I further developed skills in epidemiology, core principles of public health, health policy, leadership in public health, and advanced data analysis using SAS and R. I graduated with a GPA of 3.87, reflecting my academic dedication and research rigor.

Key Research project helped me achieve this scholarship was ““Assessment of Quality of Life and Effect of Non-Pharmacological Management in Dysmenorrhea”. This cross-sectional study explored interventions for menstrual pain and their impact on quality of life, highlighting my ability to design, execute, and analyze research in women’s health.

How Did You Find Information About AAUW International Fellowship and University of Alabama at Birmingham?

I researched university websites, scholarship portals, and professional networks such as LinkedIn. I closely followed organizations like the American Association of University Women for funding updates.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Not for this scholarship. But I did take IELTS as part of my MPH application process. Preparation included structured practice, mock exams, and refining my academic writing and communication skills.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the AAUW International Fellowship?

I focused on creating a strong, well-rounded application that highlighted my academic achievements, research experience, and career goals. My PharmD bachelor’s thesis on dysmenorrhea played a critical role, showcasing my ability to conduct meaningful research addressing women’s health. In my statement of purpose, I articulated my future goals in improving health access and outcomes for women, demonstrating both my long-term vision and commitment to making an impact in public health.

How is Your Experience at the University of Alabama at Birmingham?

My experience with the American Association of University Women International Fellowship has been highly rewarding. Although the fellowship is not institution-specific, it provides ongoing mentorship, professional guidance, and a network of accomplished women scholars worldwide. I used to report regularly to AAUW on how I was upgrading my knowledge in public health and contributing to initiatives that improve health outcomes for women and underserved populations. This engagement has helped me stay accountable to my goals, receive constructive feedback, and connect with a supportive community of women leaders in academia and research.

How Do You Rate the University of Alabama at Birmingham Academically?

While AAUW is a fellowship organization rather than an academic institution, I would highly recommend it for its rigorous selection process, mentorship, and emphasis on scholarly and professional growth. The fellowship motivates scholars to excel in research, advocacy, and leadership, ensuring that recipients make meaningful contributions in their fields.

I brought a strong healthcare and research background, with high-impact research focused on improving women’s health, a clear vision for enhancing health access and outcomes for women and demonstrated leadership and commitment to advancing women’s health initiatives.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would have started even earlier and applied to a wider range of scholarships, which would have given me more time to refine essays, gather strong recommendation letters, and tailor each application to the specific mission of the scholarship.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start early and stay organized, ensuring you manage deadlines and materials effectively.
