The Journey
My name is Nigar Mammadzada, and I’m from Azerbaijan. I am 22 years old. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Azerbaijan State University of Economics. Currently, I am pursuing an MSc in Development Economics at the University of Göttingen in Germany. During the final two years of my undergraduate studies, I developed a deep interest in issues related to development, inequality, and poverty. This growing passion led me to pursue further education in Development Economics. I chose the University of Göttingen because it is recognized globally for its excellence in this field and offers a program that aligns closely with my academic and professional goals.
DAAD ERP Scholarship Details
I was awarded the prestigious DAAD ERP Scholarship for my master’s studies in Germany. This scholarship covers living expenses, health insurance, a two-month intensive German language course, and additional financial support for various academic needs. In addition to the DAAD ERP scholarship, I was also offered the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship and received admission offers from Lund University in Sweden. However, I ultimately chose to study in Germany due to the academic strength and relevance of the program at Göttingen.
Educational Background
I completed my Bachelor's degree in Economics at the Azerbaijan State University of Economics, graduating with distinction and a GPA of 94 out of 100. In the last two years of my studies, I began focusing more on Development Economics, selecting relevant electives and deepening my understanding of global development issues. I also actively participated in scientific conferences and gained practical experience through internships and volunteer work with both local and international organizations. These experiences helped me build a strong foundation for applying to master’s programs in Development Economics.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Göttingen?
I began by thoroughly researching universities that offered specialized programs in Development Economics. The University of Göttingen stood out as one of the best options due to the program’s curriculum, faculty, and international reputation. After reviewing the admission requirements, I realized that I met the criteria and decided to apply. It’s important to note that the application deadline for this program is quite early for non-EU residents, so planning ahead is crucial. All relevant information is clearly provided on the program’s official website. For the IELTS exam, I took private classes to prepare. However, I believe that with a B2 or C1 level of English and enough self-discipline, self-study can also be effective.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD ERP Scholarship?
Throughout my undergraduate years, I consistently researched scholarship opportunities, including the DAAD ERP Scholarship. I familiarized myself with the required documents and guidelines well in advance. I also sought advice from previous recipients, which gave me a clearer understanding of the expectations and helped me avoid common mistakes. I carefully gathered all necessary documents and made sure everything aligned with the scholarship's criteria.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my motivation letter was the strongest part of my application. It clearly conveyed my academic interests, long-term goals, and the reasons why I was passionate about Development Economics. In addition, my academic achievements, relevant experiences, and well-organized documents worked together to present a strong and coherent application.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Even though I successfully secured admission and scholarships, I would start the entire application process earlier. This would have helped me avoid unnecessary stress and allowed more time to refine each part of my application.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My main advice is to research thoroughly—not just the scholarship requirements, but also the mission, values, and priorities of the program. Understand what the scholarship committee is looking for and tailor your application to reflect how your vision aligns with theirs. Look for guidance from previous winners, and most importantly, be authentic and clear in your motivation letter. Show not just your qualifications, but your commitment and long-term vision.
