The Journey
Hi, my name is Naz Kamaran, and I am from Iraq. I pursued my Master’s degree in Applied Microbiology in South Korea after completing my Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science. From an early stage in my academic journey, I developed a strong interest in microbiology and laboratory sciences, particularly in understanding microorganisms and their impact on human health and biotechnology.
Growing up in Iraq, I had limited access to advanced research facilities and international academic exposure. This motivated me to pursue higher education abroad to gain advanced scientific knowledge, research skills, and global academic experience. South Korea stood out to me because of its strong research environment, modern laboratories, and commitment to scientific innovation.
My goal was not only to advance my own education but also to bring knowledge and experience back to contribute to scientific education and research in my home country.
Global Korea Scholarship Details
I received GKS-G (Global Korean Scholarship for Graduate) to pursue my Master’s degree in Applied Microbiology at Pukyong National University in Busan, South Korea. The scholarship supported my graduate studies and helped cover major academic expenses, allowing me to focus on my research and coursework.
Receiving this scholarship was a life-changing opportunity, as it allowed me to study in a highly advanced academic environment and gain international research experience.
Educational Background
I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science at Komar University of Science and Technology. After graduating, I was selected to work as a laboratory assistant at the same university, where I further developed strong practical skills and built a solid foundation in microbiology, immunology, and clinical laboratory diagnostics.
This combination of academic training and hands-on experience prepared me well for graduate-level research, equipping me with both theoretical knowledge and technical competence. As a result, my transition into advanced microbiology studies during my graduate program in South Korea was smooth and well-supported.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Pukyong National University?
To prepare for my applications, I first researched universities that had strong microbiology or biotechnology programs. I carefully reviewed faculty research interests to find programs that aligned with my academic goals.
I also prepared my academic documents, including my transcripts, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and research interests. Writing a strong statement of purpose was particularly important because it allowed me to clearly explain my motivation, academic background, and long-term goals.
How Did You Find Information About Global Korea Scholarship and Pukyong National University?
I found most of my information through online research, university websites, and scholarship databases. Many universities provide detailed information about graduate programs and funding opportunities on their official websites.
I also searched for scholarships for international students who want to study in South Korea. Scholarship platforms and academic forums helped understand the application process and deadlines.
Sources such as scholarship databases and international education websites are often useful for students searching for funding opportunities.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
Yes, I took an English proficiency test as part of my application process. Preparing for the exam required consistent practice, especially in academic reading, writing, and listening skills.
I improved my English by reading academic articles, practicing writing essays, and communicating in English regularly. These practices helped me achieve the required score and also prepared me for studying in an international academic environment.
English proficiency tests such as the IELTS and TOEFL are commonly required for international students applying to universities abroad.

My experience studying in South Korea was extremely valuable. The academic environment was very research-oriented, and students were encouraged to think critically and independently.
Working in well-equipped laboratories allowed me to gain hands-on research experience in microbiology and biotechnology.
In addition to academics, living in South Korea also allowed me to experience a different culture, meet international students from many countries, and develop a broader global perspective.
How Do You Rate Pukyong National University Academically?
I would rate the institution very highly from an academic perspective. The university provided modern research facilities, experienced professors, and strong support for graduate students. The curriculum combined theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory training.
How Does Pukyong National University Support International Students?
The university provided support for international students through orientation programs, academic advising, and administrative support.
There were also programs designed to help international students adjust to life in Korea, including language courses and cultural activities.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing Korean?
In most graduate programs, especially in science and engineering fields, courses are often taught in English. Therefore, students can study successfully without full proficiency in Korean.
However, learning basic Korean can still be very helpful for daily life, communication, and cultural integration.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my application stood out because of my strong motivation to pursue microbiology research and my clear academic goals.
My background in Medical Laboratory Science, combined with my passion for scientific research and education, helped demonstrate that I was committed to making the most of the opportunity.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would start preparing earlier and apply to more universities and scholarships to increase my chances.
