The Journey
My name is Mouhamadou Bamba SAMB, and I’m from Senegal. I’m studying for an MSc in Mining Environmental Management at the University of Exeter, UK.
I decided to pursue a Master's in Mining Environmental Management due to the growing pollution associated with mineral extraction in Africa, particularly in Senegal. Mining plays a crucial role in modern society by providing essential raw materials for various industries, including construction, electronics, and energy production. However, it also poses significant environmental challenges, especially concerning pollution. The extraction, processing, and disposal of mining materials can lead to the contamination of soil, air, and water, contributing to ecological degradation and posing risks to human health.
Moreover, Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM), despite its economic importance, presents considerable environmental challenges. Some of the major environmental impacts associated with ASM include deforestation, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and water pollution. The use of mercury and cyanide in gold extraction, for instance, has led to widespread contamination of water bodies, posing risks to aquatic ecosystems and human health.
The Master's program will equip me with the skills to assess and mitigate the environmental impacts of mining operations while promoting sustainable practices within the industry.

Educational Background
I graduated with distinction as a geological engineer from the National School of Mines and Geology/Earth Science Institute, which laid the foundation for my strong technical skills in geology. Geology is the scientific study of the Earth, its structure, materials, and processes, including the study of rocks, minerals, landforms, and the processes that shape the Earth's surface. It involves understanding the Earth's history and the forces that have shaped it over time, from plate tectonics to volcanic activity, erosion, and sedimentation. Geologists use a variety of techniques, such as fieldwork, lab analysis, and remote sensing, to explore the Earth's past, assess its resources, and predict future changes. This field is crucial for natural resource exploration, environmental management, and hazard risk assessment.
Moreover, with more than 10 years of experience in mineral exploration, including gold, copper, and lithium, I have developed a strong understanding of geological processes. My academic background and work experience, paired with my passion for sustainable mining practices, have motivated me to address the environmental challenges that arise from mining activities.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for Institutions?
Preparing to apply to UK universities was challenging and exciting. I applied to three universities and received unconditional offers from all of them: the University of Exeter, the University of Leeds, and Cardiff University.
Preparation of my documents:
- Transcripts and academic qualifications: I translated it into English since I come from a French-speaking country.
- Proof of English language proficiency: I took the IELTS test and scored a band 7. I used materials from YouTube to prepare such as:
https://www.youtube.com/@ieltsliz
https://www.youtube.com/@E2IELTS
https://www.youtube.com/@Ieltsadvantage
- Reference letters: prepared 2 reference letters from lectures.
- Personal Statement: Write a compelling personal statement to explain why I am interested in the program, my background, and future career goals.
- CV/Resume:
After gathering all the required documents, I applied through their respective websites.
Talk about how you find your information as well as standardized test scores such as SAT/ACT/TOEFL/IELTS/GRE/GMAT etc. How did you prepare for those exams?
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Scholarship(s)?
I first heard about the Chevening scholarship from a Chevener in my country, Fatoumata Zahra Diallo. I was conditionally selected as a Chevening scholar on my first attempt but missed out because I wasn’t able to secure an unconditional offer (I had three conditional offers). The condition was to provide my English language test results. I started preparing for the test after being selected, but it was too late. I was also on the reserve list twice but wasn’t upgraded.
For this round, I fully prepared in advance for my English test, obtained two references, and wrote outstanding essays on my leadership, networking, university choices, and career plan. I also received feedback from a scholar to refine my essays.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I would say that clear and impactful career goals, strong leadership and networking essays reflecting my story and experiences, great performance during my interview, and being authentic are key factors.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Are Going Through the Process Again?
Looking back, I would have conducted broader research on the Chevening Networks and Alumni. I would have spent more time learning about how past scholars have made an impact and how I could leverage that network in the future. This would have been a great way to demonstrate how I intend to contribute to the global community and highlight the unique perspective I bring to the table.
What Advice Would You Give for Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Be Clear About Your Goals: Ensure your career objectives are specific, meaningful, and clearly demonstrate how the scholarship will help you achieve them.
Start Early: Prepare for your English test in advance and apply to your three chosen universities, securing an unconditional offer before the outcome of your interview.
Prepare Outstanding Essays: Craft compelling essays with relevant examples and remain authentic.
Be persistent: if you're not selected, never give up-keep applying
