The Journey
It is an honor to share my GKS journey, which has not only transformed my academic life but also deepened my understanding of Korean culture, diplomacy, and global engagement. I hope my experience can inspire and guide others pursuing similar dreams.
Hello! My name is MIRSHOD, and I am originally from Uzbekistan. I hold a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature, and I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in International Relations, with a minor in International Trade, at Sogang University in Seoul, South Korea.
Growing up in a multilingual environment with exposure to different cultures, I developed a strong interest in global affairs and diplomacy. My undergraduate studies laid the foundation for communication and critical analysis, but I wanted to delve deeper into how international cooperation, governance, and economic dynamics shape the world. Pursuing further education in International Relations allowed me to connect my academic curiosity with real-world global challenges, especially in the context of Korea’s growing role in international diplomacy and trade.
Receiving the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) not only gave me the opportunity to study in Korea but also allowed me to immerse myself in a new academic culture, expand my global network, and contribute meaningfully as a cultural ambassador.
Global Korea Scholarship Details
I was honored to receive the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS-2022), a prestigious government-funded program administered by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea. This fully funded scholarship covers tuition, monthly living expenses, round-trip airfare, Korean language training, research support, medical insurance, and settlement allowance.
The GKS program is highly competitive and globally recognized for promoting international exchange and academic cooperation. I was selected through the University track and am going to graduate from Sogang University, one of Korea’s leading institutions, following a one-year intensive Korean language training program at SunMoon University.
Although I had applied for other scholarships, including university-based support options in Korea, the comprehensive coverage, academic prestige, and cultural immersion offered by GKS made it my top choice. It provided the ideal platform to grow both academically and professionally in an international environment.
Educational Background
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature from the Uzbekistan State World Languages University in Uzbekistan, where I graduated with a GPA of 87/100. Throughout my undergraduate years, I developed strong skills in academic writing, research, and critical thinking, core competencies that later became essential in my graduate-level studies.
In addition to my coursework, I participated in various extracurricular activities related to international communication and language education, which sparked my interest in global affairs. My academic curiosity gradually shifted toward understanding how language, diplomacy, and global cooperation intersect.
How I Prepared to Apply to Sogang University
Preparing to apply for the GKS program and Korean universities required strategic research and planning. Since I wanted to pursue my degree in English, I began by identifying Korean universities that offered English-taught graduate programs in International Relations and International Trade. I carefully reviewed each university’s website, academic department pages, and curriculum details to ensure that the program aligned with my academic and career goals. University rankings and faculty research profiles also played an important role in helping me choose a reputable institution with strong international networks.
In addition, I looked at admission requirements, such as language proficiency (English or Korean), required documents, and available thesis advisors. I also read testimonials from former GKS scholars to better understand the student experience. Once I had shortlisted my preferred universities, I contacted admissions offices for clarification and prepared tailored application materials, including a statement of purpose and recommendation letters, well in advance. This thorough approach helped me make informed decisions and confidently apply to institutions that matched my goals.
Standardized Tests & How I Found Information
To prepare for my GKS application and graduate studies in Korea, I focused on gathering accurate information and ensuring I met all language proficiency requirements. I relied on official university websites, the Study in Korea portal, and the GKS guidelines provided by NIIED. These sources helped me understand eligibility criteria, required documents, program structures, and deadlines. Additionally, I joined online forums, watched testimonials, and read blogs from current and former GKS scholars, which provided valuable insights into the application process.
As for standardized tests, I submitted my IELTS score, as it was required for English-taught programs. I scored 7.0 on the IELTS Academic exam. To prepare, I followed a self-study plan and used official Cambridge IELTS materials, along with practice tests and speaking simulations. Although GKS doesn’t require GRE or GMAT scores, I ensured that all other aspects of my application, including my academic transcripts, study plan, and letters of recommendation, were as strong and clear as possible.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Global Korea Scholarship?
Applying for the GKS required a strong combination of academic credentials, clear goals, and preparation. I began by thoroughly studying the GKS guidelines published by NIIED, which included eligibility criteria, required documents, and the selection process.
I then focused on crafting a compelling study plan and personal statement, outlining my academic interests, career goals, and reasons for choosing Korea. I gathered recommendation letters from professors who knew my academic work well and ensured my transcripts and certificates were properly translated and notarized. Throughout the process, I kept track of deadlines and double-checked all application materials. I also connected with current GKS scholars through forums and social media to get practical advice, which helped me avoid common mistakes and gain confidence in the process.
How Is (Was) Your Experience at Sogang University and Sun Moon University?
My experience at both Sun Moon University and Sogang University has been deeply enriching. At SunMoon University, I completed a one-year Korean language training program, where the faculty showed exceptional dedication and patience. The structured curriculum, cultural immersion programs, and field trips provided a strong foundation for adjusting to life in Korea.
At Sogang University, the academic environment is intellectually stimulating. The professors are not only highly knowledgeable but also approachable, and the coursework encourages critical thinking and debate. I also appreciate the diversity among international students, which adds to a truly global classroom experience.
How Do You Rate Sogang University Academically and Why?
I rate Sogang University very highly in terms of academic quality. The university is one of Korea’s top private institutions, especially known for its programs in humanities and social sciences. What stands out to me is the interdisciplinary approach and emphasis on analytical skills, which are essential for students in International Relations.
How Do Sogang University and Sun Moon University Support International Students?
Both SunMoon and Sogang University offer substantial support to international students. There are international offices that assist with visa processes, health insurance, dormitory arrangements, and academic advising. At Sogang, there are also buddy programs, Korean language tutoring, and workshops tailored to help foreign students adjust both academically and culturally. In addition, professors are generally understanding of language and cultural barriers and are willing to provide support when needed. Regular orientations and cultural programs also help students build community and integrate smoothly.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean?
My graduate program is conducted entirely in English, as it is designed for both international and Korean students with global academic and professional goals. However, during my first year in Korea, I attended Korean language classes full-time at SunMoon University, which significantly improved my Korean communication skills. While Korean is the main language outside the classroom, the university provides a bilingual environment, and many administrative services and academic materials are available in English. This has made it possible to thrive academically while also gradually becoming more comfortable in Korean society.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing Korean?
In my experience, not knowing Korean does not create major academic challenges, especially if you’re enrolled in an English-taught program like mine. Lectures, assignments, and academic discussions are conducted in English, and professors are generally supportive of international students. However, outside the classroom, language can be a barrier, particularly when it comes to administrative tasks, daily life, or interacting with local communities. That’s why the Korean language training during the first year of the GKS program is incredibly valuable. It builds the foundational skills needed for smoother integration and daily communication in Korea.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my application stood out because of the clarity of purpose and alignment with the scholarship’s values. In my study plan, I clearly articulated how my background in English and international education would connect to my graduate research in International Relations, and how I would use this knowledge to contribute both to Korea and my home country. In addition, I had a strong academic record, experience as a language instructor and content creator, and demonstrated leadership and cross-cultural communication through my volunteer and influencer work. I also made sure my documents were well-organized, professionally presented, and tailored to each university’s program.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would start preparing even earlier, especially when it comes to gathering recommendation letters and translating official documents. I also would have taken more time to research professors and their research interests at my chosen universities, which could have made my study plan even more specific. Additionally, I would have practiced Korean more consistently before arriving in Korea to ease the transition during the first few months.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice is to start early, stay organized, and be authentic. Focus on your unique story, why you chose your field of study, how it aligns with the scholarship goals, and how you plan to make a meaningful impact. Make sure your documents reflect a coherent narrative, and don’t underestimate the importance of the study plan and personal statement. These documents are your voice; use them to show passion, vision, and commitment. Also, seek advice from current or former scholars, check official websites regularly, and prepare thoroughly for language exams. And most importantly, believe in your potential. GKS is competitive, but it’s absolutely achievable with dedication and a clear sense of purpose.
