The Journey


My name is Md Shahab Uddin, and I am from Bangladesh. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering from Bangladesh. After graduation, I worked in the biomedical equipment industry as a sales and service engineer, and I also taught as an IELTS instructor. Later, I decided to further my studies and pursue a Master’s degree in Medical Physics at the University of Eastern Finland. I chose this field because of my strong academic interest in medical technology and its applications in healthcare, as well as my long-term goal of contributing to research and development in the healthcare sector.

University of Eastern Finland Scholarship Details

I received a 100% tuition fee waiver for the first year, along with a €5000 relocation grant from the University of Eastern Finland. For my second year, I received a 70% tuition fee waiver.

Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?

I received a full tuition fee waiver for the two-year Master’s Program in Biomedical Imaging at the University of Turku

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, a field focused on cancer radiotherapy and biomedical technologies. This program provided me with a strong foundation in physics, radiation sciences, and healthcare technology.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Eastern Finland?

I was looking for universities that offered courses aligned with my previous studies. As a medical physics student, I preferred institutions that provide core medical physics courses, such as radiotherapy, and that are actively engaged in research in this field. Among them, I identified two universities. Their websites clearly outlined the requirements and application process. I needed to prepare documents such as my CV and statement of purpose, which required careful thought to highlight my skills and experiences effectively.

How Did You Find Information About Scholarships and the University of Eastern Finland?

I found the information on the university website, where it was clearly stated that a limited number of students would receive Finland scholarships, while some others could receive partial tuition fee waivers. Only one student from each program would be awarded the scholarship, and the eligibility criteria were also outlined there.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? How did you prepare for them?

Yes, I had an IELTS Score of Band 8. I took online courses and saw a YouTube playlist. One channel I followed was “Fasttrack IELTS”. That channel helped a lot

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Eastern Finland Scholarship?

In Finland, university applications and scholarship applications take place simultaneously. After admission decisions, students are ranked, and scholarships are awarded based on this ranking. Some students receive a Finland Scholarship, while others may be granted a tuition fee waiver.

How Is (was) Your Experience at the University of Eastern Finland?

Studying here has been a great experience. The teachers are very supportive and helpful, and the university provides all the resources needed for growth. A wide range of tools and software is offered, along with opportunities for conferences, projects, and collaborations. Internships are available, including options to work with companies, which ensures strong collaboration between academia and industry. The university environment is clean, well-organized, and free from discrimination. Everything is well-structured, and I have never felt forgotten or excluded. Finnish students are also very helpful and respectful.

How Do You Rate the University of Eastern Finland Academically and Why?

I would rate it really high in terms of research and collaboration opportunities. Also, I felt like it's an inclusive community.

How Does the University of Eastern Finland Support International Students?

They are very prompt and helpful in all matters. I never felt like an international student, as everyone is treated equally.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Finnish?

My classes are conducted in English.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing Finnish?

All academic classes and research activities are conducted in English, which is sufficient within the university environment. However, if you plan to work in industry or local companies, proficiency in Finnish becomes essential. While a few staff members may not speak English fluently, communication is still manageable.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

In Finland, several factors are considered during the selection process, such as academic performance, alignment with the student’s previous curriculum, IELTS score, motivation letter, CV, and work experience. I believe my profile was strong across all these areas, which is why I was awarded the scholarship.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I will change nothing,

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

When applying, it is important to be clear and strategic about what to highlight and what to leave out. In the motivation letter, space is limited, so you need to carefully decide how to present your strengths. Research the university curriculum thoroughly and align your profile as closely as possible with it. Prepare a detailed Europass CV and apply early. Think of yourself as a complete package that contains all the ingredients for success.
