My name is Md Rabbi Al Islam (拉比), and I am from Dhaka, Bangladesh. I have always been passionate about engineering because it challenges you every day to solve real-world problems, which has driven me to pursue advanced education in this field. Currently, I am enrolled in a Master’s degree in Underwater Acoustic Engineering (UAE) at Harbin Engineering University (HEU), where I am focusing on “Channel Impulse Response (CIR) prediction with partially known data for applications in Underwater Acoustic”. My decision to further my education stems from a deep passion for Underwater Acoustic Engineering and its potential to address real-world challenges in marine exploration, environmental monitoring, and underwater communication. The underwater environment presents unique obstacles, such as signal distortion, high attenuation, and unpredictable channel conditions, which hinder effective data transmission. The complexities of sound propagation in aquatic environments present unique scientific and engineering hurdles that demand innovative solutions.
By advancing my knowledge in this field, I aim to contribute to cutting-edge technologies that improve the development of robust communication systems, underwater data transmission, sonar systems, and autonomous underwater vehicles. This research has significant implications for industries such as defense, marine conservation, climate monitoring, and offshore energy, where reliable underwater communication is crucial. My goal is to push the boundaries of technology and make a lasting impact in this dynamic and evolving field.
This journey has been an incredible blend of learning, personal growth, and embracing new experiences in a different country. I’m excited to share my story and inspire others who are looking to achieve their dreams.
Chinese Government Scholarship Scholarship Details
In 2021, I was honored to receive the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), one of the most prestigious and competitive scholarships awarded by the Chinese government. This fully funded scholarship covers all aspects of my academic journey, including tuition fees, accommodation, health insurance, and a monthly stipend of 3,000 RMB. It has provided me with the financial stability and support needed to focus entirely on my education and personal development.
The CSC Scholarship is more than just financial aid—it is a transformative opportunity to pursue my passion for underwater acoustics while immersing myself in China’s rich culture and academic environment. The program also includes an intensive Chinese language training component, which has allowed me to enhance my language skills and adapt seamlessly to life in China.
As part of this scholarship, I am pursuing my Master’s degree in Underwater Acoustic Engineering (UAE) at Harbin Engineering University (HEU). This experience has not only deepened my technical expertise but has also broadened my perspective through cross-cultural interactions and exposure to China’s innovative approaches to education and technology.
At the same time, I was also offered two other prestigious scholarships: the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO) Scholarship from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) for a Master of Business Administration (equivalent to the CSC Scholarship) and the Central South University (CSU) Scholarship for a Master's in Computer Science and Technology, which provided a monthly allowance of 2,500 RMB. After careful consideration, I chose the CSC Scholarship as it offered better opportunities and support compared to the other two.
Receiving the CSC Scholarship has been a life-changing milestone, symbolizing my dedication to academic excellence and global collaboration. It has empowered me to grow as both a student and a professional, and I am deeply grateful for this incredible opportunity.
Educational Background
Before joining Harbin Engineering University (HEU), I completed my bachelor’s degree in Electronic and Information Engineering at Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China, in 2019, where I maintained a GPA of 3.31 with an average score of 83.70%. My academic journey has been instrumental in preparing me for advanced studies, providing a strong foundation in programming, algorithm design, and data analysis.
During my undergraduate years, I actively engaged in extracurricular activities, and my final year thesis, "Object Recognition Based on Deep Learning," along with my internship experience, allowed me to apply my technical skills to real-world challenges. These experiences sparked my deeper interest in underwater acoustics.
To further enhance my expertise, I pursued multiple specialization certificates from various platforms, including Google Career Certifications, CISCO, Fortinet, Kaspersky, and participated in workshops and hands-on projects. These initiatives not only expanded my technical knowledge but also strengthened my problem-solving abilities and practical understanding of data-driven solutions.
Currently, as a Master’s scholar in the People’s Republic of China, I am delving deeper into the advanced topic of "Channel Impulse Response (CIR) Prediction with Partially Known Data for Applications in Underwater Acoustics." Supported by the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), I have the unique opportunity to explore cutting-edge technologies while gaining international exposure and cultural insights.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Harbin Engineering University (HEU)?
To prepare for my application to Harbin Engineering University (HEU), I thoroughly researched the university’s programs, faculty, and the specific requirements for my chosen course. I ensured that I met all academic qualifications and gathered the necessary documents, including transcripts, recommendation letters, and a well-crafted personal statement. I also familiarized myself with the university’s admission deadlines and procedures, making sure to submit my application well in advance.
Additionally, I reviewed the English language proficiency requirements. Since IELTS was not mandatory for the application, I opted to submit my Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate to meet HEU’s standards.
Through this process, I aimed to present a clear and authentic picture of who I am and why I’m committed to pursuing a career in underwater acoustics.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
The strength of my application lies in its ability to tell a clear and authentic story. My personal statement not only highlighted my academic achievements but also delved into the deeper reasons behind my decision to pursue Underwater Acoustic Engineering, establishing a strong connection between my past experiences and future goals. By including certifications and practical projects, I demonstrated my commitment to learning and growing beyond the classroom. What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the CSC Scholarship application process again, I would start earlier to allow more time for refining my research proposal, securing strong recommendation letters, and thoroughly reviewing all document requirements. I would also apply to more universities as backup options, ensuring greater flexibility in choosing the best academic environment.
Additionally, I would work on improving my Chinese language skills before arriving in China to adapt more quickly to daily life and academic interactions.
Lastly, I would actively network with current CSC scholars to gain insights into the application process, research expectations, and student life, making my transition smoother and more informed.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
