The Journey
My name is Maryam Gazeran, a (Neuro) Biologist from Iran. I completed my undergraduate degree in Biology in Iran, and then worked as a laboratory technician in a medical and pathological laboratory, where I was inspired to continue my studies. I was awarded the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship to pursue an MSc in Biology, specializing in Neuroscience & Human Biology at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary. After graduating, I spent two years as a research assistant at the Institute of Experimental Medicine and in a pharmaceutical company in Hungary. Currently, I work as a scientific editor and content manager for a medical publishing company based in Tallinn, Estonia.
Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Details
My MSc studies at Eötvös Loránd University were supported by the Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) Scholarship. This government-funded scholarship is awarded by the Tempus Public Foundation in cooperation with the higher education authority of the student’s home country (for me, the Higher Education Commission of Iran). It covers full tuition fees, provides a monthly stipend of 43,700 HUF (~108 EUR), a monthly housing allowance of 40,000 HUF (~98 EUR) or accommodation in a dormitory, as well as social security and medical coverage throughout the MSc program. However, these funds are often insufficient since living costs can reach up to 200,000 HUF per month, so having additional savings or other income sources is necessary.
Educational Background
I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Semnan University, Iran, with a GPA of 16.24/20. During my undergraduate studies, I gained an understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of biology, and I acquired hands-on experience with various laboratory techniques.
Additionally, I worked for two years as a laboratory technician in medical and pathological laboratories, where I handled clinical samples and interacted with patients. This experience in a clinical setting was both enjoyable and rewarding, inspiring my passion for biomedical research.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Eötvös Loránd University and the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship?
To prepare for applying to institutions, I began by searching for master’s programs that matched my interests on Mastersportal.com. During my search, I found several options, and among them was the MSc Biology program at Eötvös Loránd University. Then I visited the university’s official website to learn more about the program and discovered that they offered scholarships.
After that, I reviewed the scholarship foundation’s website to understand the application requirements for both the university and the scholarship. I started preparing all necessary documents, translating my educational certificates, updating my CV, and drafting a motivation letter. Since English proficiency was mandatory, I also registered for and took the IELTS exam, ensuring I met the required score for my application.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I am not sure, but I suppose the reasons might be that I:
- Showed genuine passion and a clear vision for my research goals.
- Submitted every required document accurately and on time.
- Prepared thoroughly for the interview, demonstrating knowledge of the program and its research.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would:
- Plan and start earlier to give myself ample time for research, document preparation, and revisions.
- Create a clear timeline with all deadlines marked so nothing gets missed under pressure.
- Seek feedback sooner on my CV and motivation letter to refine them well before submission.
