Test Scores: IELTS (7.5) GPA (7.5)

The Journey
My name is Maria Shawl, and I am from Jammu and Kashmir, India. I completed my Bachelor's in English Literature from Kashmir University and went on to pursue an M.A. in Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Literary Studies at the University of Durham. I decided to pursue education abroad due to the numerous opportunities it provides, including multicultural exposure, improved learning, a democratic study environment, and an enriching research culture.
Chevening Scholarship Details
I received the Chevening Scholarship which is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office, United Kingdom. It covered my tuition expenses, medical insurance, return flight tickets, and a stipend that took care of my accommodation and food.
Educational Background
I completed my B.A. (Hons) in English from Kashmir University with a GPA of 7.5. This degree provided me with a strong foundation in English literature, covering key figures like Shakespeare and John Donne, along with other essential aspects of the subject. It also equipped me with the critical skills and knowledge that prepared me for my M.A. studies in Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Literary Studies at Durham University
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarships and Durham University?
When I first heard about the scholarship opportunity, it was through my friends. I had very little knowledge or experience in applying for scholarships or institutions, but I decided to give it a try. I worked hard on my essays, putting in the effort to make sure they reflected my passion and commitment. For the IELTS, I did some preparation, but since English was my academic background, I did not need to do extensive studying. I scored a 7.5, which made navigating university applications much smoother. While I did not do extensive research on university choices, everything worked out well in the end.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would have perhaps not underestimated myself and believed that Oxbridge was not out of my limits. I would have taken the chance to apply for Oxford or Cambridge and not self-sabotage my application process. I am very happy with my Durham experience but I suppose I would have probably taken the chance.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
I would ask everyone to take enough time to look for Universities that are best for their subjects. Take chances with bolder choices and do not underestimate your potential.
