The Journey
My name is Maliva Islam, and welcome to my story of winning the DAAD scholarship award. I always define myself as a nature lover. My personal goal has always been to develop myself as a competent and forward-thinking individual by contributing meaningful work towards the development of the society where I live. Being an Environmental Professional, I worked in several organizations and got the opportunity to have some field-level experiences in garment factories, one of the most emerging sectors in Bangladesh, and learned about their environmental challenges due to poor knowledge of the management system. These practical experiences made me rethink studying further in depth to be a useful hand in environmental management.
DAAD Scholarship Details
I received the DAAD Scholarship in 2021 to pursue my Master’s degree in Hydro Science & Engineering at Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. The scholarship fully funded my studies, covering tuition fees, monthly living expenses, and additional allowances for health insurance and travel. I was also awarded the OKP (Orange Knowledge Programme) scholarship to study Limnology and Wetland Management at TU Delft, Netherlands. However, I ultimately chose to pursue the DAAD Scholarship opportunity at TU Dresden, Germany.
Educational Background
I earned a Master’s degree in Environmental Science from Khulna University, Bangladesh. This program emphasized global warming, climate change, and sustainable technologies. I also completed my Bachelor’s in Environmental Science from the same university. My undergraduate studies were centered on limnology, biodiversity conservation, and wetland management. This strong academic foundation across environmental science, research knowledge, and English language skills provided me with the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully pursue advanced studies in Hydro Science and Engineering in Germany.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Technische Universität Dresden?
I didn’t really apply to any Universities earlier. First, I applied for the scholarships. When they got shortlisted or selected, the Universities invited them to apply. And the documents were, as usual, like the scholarship application.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD Scholarship?
I researched the scholarship requirements thoroughly and aligned my academic profile, research interests, and professional experiences with a focus on sustainable development and global impact. I emphasized:
- My publication on drinking water in coastal Bangladesh.
- Practical research experiences in climate change modeling and GIS-based environmental assessment.
- My commitment is to using education for social-environmental betterment.
I addition, I also carefully collected and prepared documents such as academic transcripts, a detailed CV, professional reference letters, and a fully self-written motivation letter highlighting my achievements and their contributions to my personal and professional success.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
My motivation letter. During my interview, I asked to give feedback about my application. The professor said, my motivation letter was unique than others, which made them shortlist my application.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would have advanced my German language skills before coming to Germany for sure.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
For anyone aiming to apply for a similar scholarship, my foremost advice is to begin the process early. First come, first served.
Make your own story. Create a unique motivation letter with simple words and clearly stating what you can further learn and offer to the nation after finishing your studies. Instead of focusing on what you have done earlier.
Take the time to thoroughly research the scholarship and program requirements, identify universities that align with your academic and career goals, and start preparing your application materials well ahead of the deadline.
