The Journey
My name is Konstantinos Kariotis, an aspiring bioengineering and synthetic biology innovator from Thessaloniki, Greece. I am currently studying biochemistry (BSc.) at the University of Bristol, building the foundation for a research career bridging the gap between engineering and biology.
Think Big Scholarship Details
I received the Think Big Scholarship from the University of Bristol, awarded to less than 2% of applicants. Receiving the highest level of funding available enabled me to study at a world-class university. I was also offered many scholarships to study in the USA, which I ultimately declined in favor of Bristol’s unique strengths in synthetic biology.
Educational Background
I completed high school in Greece, attending Anatolia College and doing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). The IB’s emphasis on academic rigour and extracurricular engagement helped me exercise my intellectual curiosity, exploring different career options. During this time, I founded and led an iGEM team, participating in the world’s premier synthetic biology competition and conference. This transformative experience sparked my decision to pursue this field seriously.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Bristol?
I was fortunate to be supported by experienced university counselors in high school, who guided me through the application process and helped me refine my essays. I applied to the USA on a test-optional basis, so I did not take the SAT or ACT. I did, however, take the IELTS, for which I prepared by doing timed mock exams. As a bilingual speaker of Greek and English, extensive preparation wasn’t necessary.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Think Big Scholarship?
Preparation started years before applying, as I gradually discovered my interests and accumulated meaningful experience. Having gone through the US college application process first, I had already engaged in introspection and defined who I was. When the time came for the Think Big scholarship, I clearly articulated my identity, my aspirations, and how the university and scholarship could accelerate my journey. Importantly, I did not only focus on achievements. I also emphasized my potential, explaining what I would do with the opportunity if selected.
How is (was) Your Experience at the University of Bristol?
Studying at Bristol has been intellectually engaging and rewarding. I’ve gained hands-on lab skills and taken the initiative to network with professors and researchers who are leaders in their fields. I’ve also actively pursued lab experience, as I prepare for graduate applications.
Through the Think Big Scholarship development programme, I have had the chance to meet with other motivated and ambitious individuals. This has helped me build a network of like-minded peers who come from all around the world and are pursuing different disciplines.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I presented a clear and forward-looking narrative. I wasn’t just applying to fund my studies; I demonstrated focus, ambition, and a vision for the future in biotech and translational research. Sharing my unique experiences and future vision helped humanize my application. Connecting the university’s strengths to my goals made the argument for why I should be awarded the scholarship clear. That made the difference.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would have started networking earlier and more courageously. Building genuine connections with the right people can unlock insights and opportunities that no other resource can provide.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Start early. Writing the application is only a fraction of what makes an application successful. The real work begins before you even realize that a scholarship opportunity might be for you. Gain meaningful experience that aligns with your goals, and take the time to reflect so you’re ready to tell your story when the time comes.
