My name is Khalid Ahmed, and I am from Sudan. Over the past few years, Sudan has faced what is now considered the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. Millions of people have been forcibly displaced, including myself. Education, stability, and even daily safety became uncertain overnight.

Despite this, I did not give up. I knew that if I wanted to contribute meaningfully to my country and my community in the future, I had to keep going academically and personally. That belief pushed me to aim for a leading university and pursue an MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh. I chose this field because energy is central to development, healthcare, water access, and recovery in conflict-affected countries like Sudan.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Khartoum. My engineering background provided strong analytical and problem-solving skills and prepared me well for advanced study in energy systems.

I would worry less. Looking back, fear of rejection was the biggest unnecessary burden. The application process is demanding, but fear should never be the reason you don’t apply.
