The Journey

My name is Ilyas Khurshid, originally from Peshawar, Pakistan. I am currently based in Abu Dhabi, UAE. I pursued my PhD in Numerical Simulation in Petroleum Engineering from Seoul National University (SNU), South Korea, ranked 36th globally (QS Rankings). I chose this field because of my strong interest in solving real-world energy challenges using computational modeling and simulation techniques. With over 13 years of experience in teaching, research, and industry, my motivation was to gain advanced expertise and contribute to the development of sustainable energy technologies.

Samsung Global Hope Scholarship Details

During my PhD at Seoul National University, I received the prestigious Samsung Global Hope Scholarship, which covered full tuition and a monthly living stipend for the entire duration of my PhD (2011–2014). This scholarship is one of the most competitive and renowned programs offered to international students in South Korea.

Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?

Yes, I was also offered the Japanese Government Research Fellowship at Hokkaido University in 2013, and prior to that, I was awarded the HEC/MS Engineering Fellowship from the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan for my Master’s studies (2008–2010) at Seoul National University.

These scholarships helped me build a strong academic foundation and broaden my international exposure.

Educational Background

D. in Energy Systems Engineering (Numerical Simulation in Petroleum Engineering), Seoul National University, South Korea.

S. in Energy Systems Engineering, Seoul National University, South Korea.

S. in Mining Engineering (Drilling Engineering Track), University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Peshawar, Pakistan.

Throughout my academic journey, I maintained excellent academic records and was ranked second in my undergraduate program. My strong foundation in thermodynamics, fluid flow, and numerical methods prepared me well for specialization in petroleum reservoir simulation and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) modeling.

How Did You Find Information About Scholarships and Institutions?

I extensively researched university websites, contacted professors, and networked with peers studying abroad. University forums and academic portals were also helpful in learning about available scholarships and application procedures.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

I took the TOEFL, GRE, and TEPS for English language proficiency. I prepared using various resources and practice tests to meet the requirements for South Korean institutions.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Scholarship?

I tailored my Statement of Purpose (SOP) and research proposal to align with the focus areas of the host institutions. I emphasized my research experience, publications, and technical skills, and highlighted how my goals aligned with the mission of Samsung Global Hope and other sponsors. I also ensured that recommendation letters came from credible academic and professional sources.

How Is (Was) Your Experience at Seoul National University?

My time at Seoul National University was academically enriching. I had access to world-class labs, cutting-edge simulation tools, and a highly supportive academic environment. The multicultural exposure also shaped my communication and leadership skills.

How Do You Rate Seoul National University Academically and Why?

I would rate SNU 5/5 academically. The university provides rigorous academic training, abundant research funding, and strong collaborations with industry and international partners.

How Does Seoul National University Support International Students?

SNU offers dedicated international student offices, language support programs, cultural exchange opportunities, and visa-related guidance. The Samsung Global Hope Scholarship also provided mentoring and career counseling services.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean?

Graduate-level engineering courses at SNU were conducted entirely in English. While Korean language skills were helpful for social integration, they were not mandatory for academic success.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing Korean?

No, especially for graduate programs in engineering and science. Lectures, research supervision, and lab work were all conducted in English.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

My application was strengthened by a combination of:

  1. Strong academic background (Top 2 in undergrad, GPA distinctions)
  2. Relevant industry and teaching experience
  3. Well-defined research goals supported by prior work
  4. Multiple publications in SCI-indexed journals
  5. A focused and customized Statement of Purpose

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would start learning the host country’s language earlier to better integrate socially and professionally. Additionally, I would have applied to multiple institutions in parallel to broaden my options and negotiate offers more effectively.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

  • Start early and do thorough research on scholarship deadlines
  • Align your research interests with faculty members at your target institution
  • Highlight any unique achievements or publications in your application
  • Ensure your application documents (CV, SOP, recommendation letters) are well-polished
  • Reach out to current or past scholars for guidance and support
