The Journey
Hi, I'm Humayra Tasnim Nooha! I'm from Bangladesh and I grew up in the UAE, where I completed my IGCSEs and A-levels. Right now, I'm doing a Bachelor of Science in Computing and Software Systems at the University of Melbourne.
I've always loved solving problems and figuring out how things work, which is what draws me to programming. There’s something really satisfying about writing code and watching your ideas come to life. That’s why I chose computer science; it allows me to combine creativity with logic.

Educational Background
I scored 6 A*s in my IGCSEs and 4 A*s in my A-levels. I also won several Cambridge Learner Awards:
- Highest Mark in the World – AS Mathematics
- Top in Country – AS Computer Science
- Top in the World – IGCSE Mathematics
- Top in Country – IGCSE Biology
- Top in Country – IGCSE Business
These achievements played a major role in my university applications and showed that I could handle an academically rigorous program. For A-levels, I studied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Science. All these subjects are relevant to my field of study, and my background in math and computing has been particularly helpful in preparing me for a Computer Science degree.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Melbourne?
I applied through IDP Education. My IDP counselor provided guidance on application timelines and requirements, but I also did a lot of independent research to compare universities, understand courses, and learn from the experiences of students who had already gone through the process.
I found most of my information about universities, courses, and scholarship opportunities online. I relied on university websites, Google searches, and YouTube videos made by current students and successful applicants.
I took the IELTS and scored an overall band 8.0. To prepare, I used free resources on the official IELTS website and followed several trusted YouTube channels that shared tips and sample responses.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship?
I practiced writing detailed, authentic essays that were personal and showed my growth over the years. I also asked my friends and teachers to read my drafts and give me feedback, which helped me improve clarity and structure.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
My academic achievements certainly helped, but my essays also made a difference. I viewed each essay as a chance to tell my story and made sure they were specific to each scholarship and university. I clearly connected my goals to the values of each university and explained why I was a good fit.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I could go through the process again, I would start earlier and organize everything more efficiently. Managing everything at the last minute added unnecessary stress. Starting early would have given me more time to revise my essays.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My biggest advice is to focus on academics, since Australian universities place a lot of weight on grades. Beyond that, work on developing your essay writing skills, as it is very important that you can clearly express your story, goals, and motivations. Don’t be afraid to ask others for feedback, and don’t rush your applications.
