The Journey

Hello, I am Hanna Silmi Zahra, an Indonesian medical doctor and an awardee of the Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship (University Recommendation). Currently, I am a research student, and starting April 2025, I will embark on my PhD journey in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Pediatrics Unit, at the Graduate School of Medicine, Shinshu University, Japan.

My passion lies in biomedical engineering, particularly in chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy and research—an innovative and rapidly advancing field, especially in developed countries. Since its groundbreaking Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2017, CAR T cell therapy has revolutionized cancer treatment, offering new hope where conventional therapies fall short. However, research and development in this field remain scarce in developing countries like Indonesia, largely due to the high costs associated with both the therapy and its research. Bridging this gap is crucial to making cutting-edge cancer treatments more accessible worldwide.

MEXT Scholarship Details

I have been receiving the MEXT Scholarship for research student period (6 months) and PhD program, which was proposed by Shinshu University, as I applied to the university first. As a Medical Doctor, I am eligible to pursue a PhD degree without graduating from a master’s degree in several countries, including Japan.
The scholarship is offered by the Japanese Government’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT), also known in Japanese as Monbukagakushou Shougakukin (文部科学省奨学金). This scholarship is available for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degree programs, as well as non-degree courses. It covers a monthly stipend, tuition and fees, and travel expenses (round-trip airfare).

There are two ways to apply for the MEXT Scholarship:
1. Embassy Recommendation
Applicants must apply through the Japanese embassy or consulate in their home country. The selection process typically involves a written application, examinations, and interviews.
2. University Recommendation
Japanese universities recommend candidates directly to MEXT based on their internal selection processes.

Educational Background

I was accepted into and graduated with a Medical Doctor (MD) degree from Universitas Padjadjaran, Indonesia, in 2015 and 2020, respectively.

During my time in medical school, I was actively involved in a medical student research organization, participated in national medical student scientific competitions representing my university, and engaged in Indonesian medical student activities related to both national and international research exchanges. Additionally, I took part in various social volunteering initiatives. These experiences, particularly my research and scientific involvement, equipped me with the skills and knowledge to pursue further education.

As a medical student, I participated in several scientific competitions for Indonesian medical students, consistently focusing on advanced medical therapies such as CAR T-cell therapy. This dedication led me to win an Indonesian medical student scientific poster competition, further strengthening my motivation to delve deeper into CAR T-cell research.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Shinshu University?

I reviewed the PhD program requirements for international students at the university of my choice. After identifying the necessary documents, I created a checklist of materials I needed to prepare. Since most universities and scholarships abroad require an English language proficiency test, I took the IELTS.

Additionally, I reached out to the graduate admissions staff to inquire about PhD programs available for international students under a professor’s supervision that aligned with my research interests. At the same time, I asked about the MEXT University Recommendation Scholarship to understand the eligibility criteria and application process.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the MEXT Scholarship?

As I was applying for the MEXT University Recommendation Scholarship, I first submitted my application to Shinshu University and underwent the university’s internal selection process, which consisted of two stages: administrative screening and an interview.

Once the university announced the selection results, I was nominated by the university for the MEXT Scholarship. To prepare for the final interview conducted by MEXT, I had the opportunity to participate in a mock interview with another MEXT scholarship awardee, which helped me gain confidence before the actual interview.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I highlighted the gap between reality and the ideal state, demonstrating how I could bridge it. Additionally, I structured my responses using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to provide clear and compelling answers. I also exceeded some of the scholarship’s requirements, further strengthening my application. Moreover, my academic background and portfolio strongly supported my "big why" for pursuing further education and aligning with the scholarship’s mission.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I did my best in preparing for my PhD journey, including meeting the scholarship requirements. However, if I were to go through the process again, I would focus more on improving my Japanese language skills, particularly obtaining a Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) certificate. This would not only have strengthened my MEXT Scholarship application but also served as proof of my ability to communicate effectively in Japanese, both in daily life and academic settings.

What Advice Would You Give to Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

1. Identify Your "Big Why" – Clearly define your motivation for applying to both the university and the scholarship. A strong purpose will guide your application and set you apart.
2. Align with the Scholarship's Vision – Ensure that the scholarship's goals and values resonate with your own aspirations and career plans.
3. Choose a Relevant Major – Select a field of study that aligns with your previous education and future ambitions.
4. Start Early – Ideally, begin preparing as an undergraduate student to strengthen your profile over time.
5. Build a Strong Portfolio – Showcase your academic achievements, research experience, leadership roles, and extracurricular activities to demonstrate your potential.
6. Exceed Minimum Requirements – Meeting the eligibility criteria is essential, but exceeding them will make your application more competitive.
7. Seek Guidance from Awardees – Connect with past recipients of the scholarship for insights, tips, and mentorship.
8. Be Authentic – Present your genuine self in your application, highlighting your unique experiences and aspirations.
