The Journey

My name is Girish Ningappa Mathad, and I am originally from India. I pursued my PhD in Food Science at the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) in Pingtung, Taiwan. Since I was a kid, I dreamt of doing research on food—how different kinds of food are developed and, most importantly, how I could contribute something meaningful to society, as food is a very essential part of life. Pursuing a PhD in Food Science was the natural way to achieve this goal, combining my passion for research with a commitment to sustainable innovation.

Educational Background

My academic background is highly relevant to my PhD studies. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Horticulture at the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot, Karnataka, followed by a Master's degree in Horticulture - Post Harvest Technology at Amity University, Noida.

My previous degrees provided a strong foundation in agriculture and the subsequent handling and processing of produce. This preparation was crucial, as my PhD in Food Science required me to build upon this knowledge to conduct innovative research on food development and sustainability.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST)?

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

My journey to NPUST was made easier because NPUST and Amity University are partner universities. This existing relationship provided a clear pathway and helped me discover the opportunity to pursue my PhD studies abroad in Taiwan.

I did not take any standardized tests like TOEFL or IELTS. This was primarily because India is considered an English-speaking country for admissions purposes in Taiwan, and the university waived the requirement.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the MOE (Ministry of Education) Taiwan Scholarship?

My focus for the MOE essay and application was ensuring every component was strong and unique:

  • Study Plan: I spent significant time drafting a detailed, unique study plan outlining innovative research ideas.
  • Motivation Letter: I ensured my motivation letter was persuasive, clearly connecting my past experience to my future research goals.
  • Strong Recommendations: I secured strong recommendation letters from my professors who could speak genuinely about my research capabilities and dedication.

How Do You Rate the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) Academically and Why?

I would rate the institution academically at 8/10. NPUST is one of the oldest universities in Taiwan, specializing in agriculture and sciences, and celebrating its 101st anniversary. It is a beautiful, green campus with great international exposure, well-equipped labs, and supportive staff across all science fields.

How Does the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) Support International Students?

NPUST is highly supportive of international students:

  • The university offers a variety of scholarships and different international programs.
  • All courses are conducted in English.
  • There is a great opportunity for foreign students to learn Mandarin.
  • The university organizes timely visits to different companies and field trips, enhancing practical knowledge.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Mandarin?

Language of Classes: English.

Language Barrier: There were no significant academic issues for non-native speakers of the local language. Professors and staff consistently speak English, meaning language is not a barrier when studying at the university.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

What made my application unique was likely the direct relevance of my background study to my PhD research and my unique, innovative, and sustainable study plan. Having a clear vision for innovative research in Food Science definitely helped my application stand out.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were going through the process again, I would likely focus more on networking with potential supervisors even earlier in the process to align my research proposal perfectly before submitting the official application.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My top piece of advice is to ensure your motivation letter, resume, and study plan are truly unique and reflect your personality and vision. Most importantly, stay positive and motivated even though you feel discouraged during the process. Keep pushing forward, because one day, that hard work will surely take you to the highest point of the summit!
