The Journey


My name is Francelia Castañeda, and I am from Mexico City, Mexico. I have over 20 years of professional experience in the financial sector, specializing in compliance, sales, and anti–money laundering (AML). In 2024, I began my MSc in Venture Capital and Private Equity with Financial Technology at University College London (UCL). I chose this program because I wanted to combine my expertise in finance with cutting-edge knowledge in fintech and investment strategies, with the goal of driving sustainable, impactful projects, especially in agriculture, education, health tech, and fintech.

Chevening Scholarship Details

I am a recipient of the Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. The scholarship covers full tuition fees, living expenses, travel costs, and other allowances.

Educational Background

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from Escuela Bancaria y Comercial (EBC), where I graduated with a GPA of 9.2/10. I have postgraduate studies in Strategic Management in Information and Communication Technologies with a GPA of 8.2/10. My strong academic record in business and finance, along with my professional experience, provided the analytical, research, and leadership skills needed to pursue graduate studies in venture capital and fintech.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to University College London?

Finding Information: I researched programs through university websites, LinkedIn networking, and scholarship platforms such as the Chevening website and StudyUK. I also reached out to alumni to better understand the application process and the academic culture.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Chevening Scholarship?

I applied 5 times, and I tried to improve my essay from previous years. I improved my leadership and networking examples, aligning them with Chevening’s criteria. I attended webinars hosted by the British Council and connected with former Cheveners for feedback. I also refined my essays through multiple drafts, focusing on clear storytelling, quantifiable achievements, and a strong connection to my future impact in Mexico.

How is Your Experience at University College London?

Studying at UCL has been intellectually challenging and enriching. The diverse student body, world-class faculty, and London’s dynamic ecosystem have expanded my perspective on global investment trends and innovative business models.

How Do You Rate University College London Academically and Why?

I rate UCL as excellent. The program’s combination of theoretical depth and practical exposure, including networking events, guest lectures from industry leaders, and case competitions, ensures students are industry-ready.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

My long-term vision for leveraging venture capital and fintech to create sustainable economic impact in Mexico and Latin America, combined with my 20 years of financial industry experience, made my application distinctive. I demonstrated clear, actionable plans and aligned them with Chevening’s mission to develop future leaders.

What Would You Have Done Differently?

I would have started applying to the TOEFL immediately.
