The Journey

Hello!

I am Faria Marha from Dhaka, Bangladesh. I recently completed my MSc in Infection Biology at the University of Glasgow. Ever since my undergraduate studies, I have been fascinated by the microscopic world, the ever-ongoing battle of pathogens against our immune defences. This inherent intrigue, paired with my love for research, inspired me to pursue a career in molecular biology and eventually become a researcher.

Tell Us About the Scholarship You Received

I was honoured to receive the GREAT Scholarship, jointly funded by the University of Glasgow and the British Council. This generous award of £10,000 covered nearly half of my tuition fees and made it possible for me to pursue my studies in the UK.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

Yes! I was awarded merit-based scholarships during my BSc and MSc studies at Brac University in Bangladesh. However, for my MSc in Glasgow, the GREAT Scholarship was my key source of support, and it opened the door for me to study at one of the top 100 institutions in the world.

What Is Your Educational Background, and How Did It Prepare You?

I hold a BSc in Biotechnology (CGPA: 3.78/4.00) and began my MSc in Biotechnology with a perfect CGPA: 4.00/4.00 before transferring to Glasgow. My coursework included Advanced Immunology, Virology, Genomics, and Proteomics, all of which laid the pathway for an intensive postgraduate degree and the research project.

Moreover, my undergraduate thesis on hospital-acquired MRSA and my MSc project on Staphylococcus aureus pathogenicity islands gave me valuable hands-on experience and helped narrow down my research focus.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Glasgow

A strategic and mindful approach. I reviewed course modules, explored faculty research profiles, and even connected with alumni to ensure the program was the right fit. Once I was sure, I focused on writing a strong personal statement that tied together my academic journey, research experience, and future goals.

How Did You Find Information About the GREAT Scholarship and the University of Glasgow?

I became a bit of a “scholarship detective”! I browsed university websites, British Council resources, and online forums, and spoke to peers and alumni who had gone through the process. This combination of online research and personal networking helped me find the opportunities that suited me best.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests?

Well, I had to. Despite having sat for GCSEs and A levels and having English as a medium of instruction, I did need to take an IELTS test.

How Did You Prepare Your Scholarship Application?

I focused on authenticity and clarity. My personal statement highlighted my academic preparation, my ambition to contribute to infection biology research, and the financial and family circumstances that made this scholarship crucial for me. I also selected referees who could speak to both my academic ability and research potential.

What Was Your Experience Like at the University of Glasgow?

Transformational! I had the chance to work in advanced labs, learn techniques like protein production without cells, protein purification, flow cytometry, and collaborate with inspiring professors. The university community is incredibly supportive, with resources for international students, career guidance, and academic writing workshops. Plus, the cohort was amazing; I made great friends!

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe it was the combination of strong academics, meaningful research experience, clear career goals, and a heartfelt narrative that showed resilience and determination. I wanted the committee to see not just what I had achieved, but why this scholarship would be transformative for me.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Could Go Through the Process Again?

I would start my scholarship research even earlier and probably look for external funding.

What Advice Would You Give to Future Applicants?

Definitely, START EARLY! The earlier, the better. Give yourself plenty of time to gather more information on the course and think about what your goal is. If you are interested in going into research, investigate how your degree can help you progress into a research role. On the other hand, if you want to move into healthcare-centric roles or specialized roles, they often require accredited courses or specialized registration. So, I would say think about it thoroughly, then tailor your essay accordingly to TELL YOUR STORY. Going beyond grades and explaining why this scholarship matters to you. Highlighting how your education will benefit others, not just yourself, can SHOW how it can IMPACT the world. GET FEEDBACK from mentors and peers to review your application. Trust me, a neutral pair of eyes will help you refine your application. Rejections happen, but persistence pays off so STAY RESILIENT and keep applying.
