The Journey
My name is Farhan Hussain, and I am a Mechanical Engineer from Pakistan. I have both research and industrial R&D experience in mechanical design, analysis, and structural engineering. Currently, I am pursuing the European Master's in Advanced Solid Mechanics (STRAINS) as an Erasmus Mundus Scholar, based at the Université de Lille in France, which allows me to study and collaborate across different European countries.
Educational Background
Before joining the Erasmus Mundus program, I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS). During that time, I gained hands-on experience in simulation, finite element analysis, and mechanical design projects. I also worked as a Research Assistant in the Engineering Dynamics and Automation Laboratory, where I carried out advanced simulations and experimental validations. These experiences prepared me to adapt quickly to the multi-country academic environment of Erasmus Mundus by building a strong technical foundation and problem-solving mindset.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Institution?
I started by thoroughly researching the STRAINS program curriculum and aligning it with my professional goals in structural design and mechanics of materials. I reviewed faculty profiles, course offerings, and partner universities to ensure they matched my interest in sustainable engineering practices. I also worked on tailoring my Letter of Motivation and CV to highlight relevant projects, such as erosion testing rigs, high-velocity impact analysis, and industrial design optimization.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?
I had the opportunity to secure 100% scholarships from multiple universities in Sweden, Germany, Italy, and Finland, but I ultimately chose the Erasmus Mundus program because of its unique multi-country mobility, multidisciplinary curriculum, and strong industry-academia linkage. While preparing, I carefully highlighted my relevant academic, research, and industrial experiences and presented them in an efficient, structured manner through my CV and Letter of Motivation. I believe what made my application stand out was not only the strength of my profile but also the clarity with which I connected my background and career goals to the program’s objectives.
Could You Briefly Discuss the Erasmus Mundus Program You Pursued and the Specific Field of Study It Focused On?
The Erasmus Mundus program I joined is the European Master's in Advanced Solid Mechanics (STRAINS). It focuses on structural design, mechanics of materials, dynamics, vibrations, and composite materials, while also integrating sustainability and innovation. The program not only deepens theoretical understanding but also emphasizes practical application through advanced simulations, design projects, and collaborative research.
How Did the Cost of Living Vary Across the Countries You Studied In? Which Country Was the Most Affordable or Expensive, and How Did You Manage Financially?
The cost of living varied significantly across the host countries. France was relatively more expensive so far, especially in housing and daily expenses, while some other partner countries offered more affordable living conditions. I managed financially through the Erasmus Mundus scholarship stipend, careful budgeting, and by prioritizing essential expenses.
Did You Face Any Language Barriers, and if So, How Did You Overcome Them? Did the Language of Instruction Change From One Country to Another?
The language of instruction for all courses was English, so academically, I did not face challenges. However, adapting to daily life in non-English-speaking environments sometimes required effort. To overcome this, I actively practiced the basics of the local languages and tried to engage with local communities, which also enriched my cultural experience.
Would You Recommend the Erasmus Mundus Program to Others? What Advice Would You Give to Someone Considering This Scholarship?
I would highly recommend the Erasmus Mundus program to aspiring students. It offers not only top-quality education but also cultural exposure, networking opportunities, and international mobility. My advice is to prepare a strong, focused application that clearly connects your academic background, research, and professional goals with the program’s strengths. It’s also important to highlight your adaptability and motivation to thrive in a multicultural environment.
Looking Back, Would You Have Done Anything Differently During Your Time in the Program?
Looking back, I would engage even more in extracurricular and networking opportunities offered during the program. While I focused strongly on academics and research, Erasmus Mundus also provides a unique chance to build lasting international collaborations and friendships. Balancing both academic and cultural aspects more equally would make the experience even more rewarding. Since I still have one more year, I will try to focus on this more.
