The Journey
My name is Evi Mariana, and I am from Indonesia. Studying abroad has been my aspiration since my undergraduate years, as I wanted to experience learning in countries known for their strong education systems. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia. After graduation, I began my career in the private sector, working in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This experience laid a strong foundation for my interest in sustainable development and responsible business practices.
Building on this professional background, I pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) through the SEPT Program at Leipzig University, Germany, which focuses on the management and development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and their roles within value chains. This academic experience further deepened my interest in sustainability within business systems and eventually led me to continue my research on value chains for my PhD under the International PhD Program for Agricultural Economics, Bioeconomy, and Sustainable Food Systems (IPPAE) at Justus Liebig University Giessen. Both my Master’s and PhD studies have been generously funded by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Services) Scholarship.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Leipzig University and Justus Liebig University Giessen?
I searched for scholarship information on the internet and also learned from my seniors during my undergraduate studies, as some of them had received scholarships for exchange programs or further studies abroad. I carefully reviewed the scholarship requirements and reached out to previous recipients for advice, many of whom I found through platforms such as LinkedIn and personal blogs.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing the Native Language of the Country?
Both my Master’s and PhD programs are conducted in English. Since English is not my native language, I needed to take the IELTS test to demonstrate my proficiency. At that time, I was working full-time and did not have the opportunity to attend a preparation course, so I studied independently using IELTS preparation books and online practice tests. Through consistent self-study, I managed to achieve a score that met the scholarship requirements.
However, as Germany is not an English-speaking country, the ability to communicate in German is also important for daily life and dealing with administrative matters. The DAAD provides a two-month intensive German course prior to the start of studies, but it is up to each student to continue learning and practicing the language. Being able to speak German is very helpful beyond academic life, such as for socializing, doing internships at German companies, or working part-time during the study period.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
In my opinion, my applications stood out because I presented a strong connection between my professional background and the programs I applied for. I clearly explained how pursuing further studies would deepen my knowledge, strengthen my professional capacity, and enable me to contribute more effectively to the people of Indonesia.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice for those applying for a scholarship is that, beyond meeting all the administrative requirements, you should focus on developing your expertise and working in areas that align with your professional skills and experience. It becomes much easier to write a convincing motivation letter when you have a clear and practical reason why studying abroad and receiving the scholarship will strengthen your professional capacity. Most importantly, show how your studies will not only support your personal growth but also enable you to make meaningful contributions to others and create a positive impact through your work.
