The Journey

My name is Euphrasia Atieno, from Kenya, East Africa. I recently completed my first year of the Master of Science in International Development program at the University of Edinburgh.

I chose this course as it closely aligns with my professional goals and builds on my experience working on global issues and systemic inequalities. Through this education, I aim to contribute meaningfully to the development and implementation of policies that drive sustainable change.

The University of Edinburgh’s online program offered the flexibility to pursue advanced studies without compromising my responsibilities as a mother to my five-year-old daughter. The program structure has enabled me to remain actively present in my child's life while pursuing my academic and professional dreams.

Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Details

I am a proud recipient of the coveted and highly competitive Mastercard Foundation Scholarship. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program awards scholarships to students from Africa with high potential but limited access to educational opportunities, offering comprehensive support through to graduation. The scholarship covers tuition, academic resources, mental health support, and other related expenses. While award amounts vary depending on the program and study mode, I am awarded £6,000 in tuition annually.

Educational Background

I hold a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the Multimedia University of Kenya, graduating with Second Class Upper Division honors, and an Individualized Technical Studies Certificate in Digital Marketing from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, where I graduated with honors.

My academic background has developed my skills in communication, research, and critical thinking, preparing me to analyze complex social issues, advocate effectively for change, and contribute meaningfully to the field of international development.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Edinburgh?

I thoroughly explored the school’s website to gain a clear understanding of the International Development program and potential career paths. To get deeper insights, I reached out directly to the admissions office with specific questions about the curriculum, structure and delivery. Additionally, I consulted my mentor, an alumna of the institution, whose firsthand experience encouraged me to set realistic expectations and tailor my application.

How did you prepare for the IELTS?

I initially felt overwhelmed about where to start with IELTS, but I found most of the information on the official websites and through helpful YouTube tutorials. I also used free practice materials available online. To prepare efficiently, I set aside dedicated study time each week, studying in the library for several weeks to avoid distractions. Consistent practice, especially with sample questions and mock tests, built my confidence and boosted my performance on exam day.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship?

I visited the websites frequently to learn more about the scholarship and institution, while taking notes. I then approached my mentor, an alumna of both the scholarship and the institution, with questions. Her insights helped me understand what to expect and how to position myself. I also added the key dates and deadlines to my calendar and checklists to track application requirements and documents. In addition, I compiled my academic records, resume, and requested the reference letter well in advance. Then, I carefully followed instructions, wrote and revised essays for weeks to accurately highlight my strengths and interests.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

Preparedness. I knew what I wanted, and I went out of my comfort zone to get it.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would take time off work to focus on preparing for the interview. I was juggling multiple responsibilities and was interviewed under very challenging circumstances on my end, which almost impacted my performance. While my overall preparedness helped me cope, I believe setting aside dedicated time would have allowed me to be even more focused and confident during the interview.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Knowing yourself and being able to clearly articulate your strengths is crucial throughout the entire application process. Being authentic and strategic about how you showcase your abilities can guarantee a strong impression on admissions committees.
