The Journey
My name is Eunice Nimo, a young climate enthusiast and researcher who resides in Ghana.
I have an MSc. Agroforestry and Food Security and a BSc. Natural Resources Management. I decided to pursue these educational fields because growing from a farming community I wanted to explore sustainable agricultural practices that not only supported farmers and their livelihoods, but also restored ecosystems. Following this path and passion, I co-founded an NGO named Sowing Seeds Alliance (SoSA), and doubles as the Director of operations. My organization is aimed at empowering youth, children, and marginalized communities through the use of technologies towards climate change adaptation and mitigation. I possess strong skills in leadership and public speaking and I have dedicated this experience in educating and raising awareness on sustainable livelihood and environmental stewardship over the past 4 years.
Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship Details
I received the Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship in 2021, from the Commonwealth Scholar Commission in the UK. This scholarship was tied to my admission at Bangor University in Wales, UK. The scholarship amounted to 17,800 Euros to cover my fees over my three-year distance learning period.
Educational Background
I have a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management and specialized in Agroforestry in my third year. I graduated with a 68.69 CGPA. This academic background equipped me with practical experience and research knowledge in sustainably managing of natural resources. Building on this foundation, I wanted to explore further how resources could be managed without compromising access to food, farmers livelihood or their economic benefits, and this was what motivated me to pursue a Master’s degree in Agroforestry and Food Security.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Bangor University?
Finding information about the institution and then available scholarship opportunities is an essential step. I got to know about Bangor University from a senior colleague who had earlier applied to this institution. I also took time to personally visit the school’s website and update myself on the resources available and the programmes they offered. Coming from a background in Natural Resources Management with a specialization in Agroforestry, I was keen on gaining admission to a school that offered a Agroforestry or a related programme which was flexible. I also reviewed the profiles of the lecturers and professors to understand their areas of focus and research interests, to see how they could support me in shaping my own research direction.
After this process, I sent cold emails to the professors in the Natural Science school about my interest in undertaking a masters degree and if there were available funding opportunities I could also explore, and it was through this step I got to know about the Commonwealth Distance Learning scholarship.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
My school required scores from TOEFL, and they also provided an option to students who had undertaken their previous studies in English to submit an English proficiency. So, I submitted an English proficiency letter acquired from my previous institution – Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana.
