The Journey

I am Edgar Abaho from Uganda, currently pursuing a Joint Master’s Degree in Mathematical Modelling and Optimization at the University of L’Aquila and the University of Hamburg. My academic journey began with a strong curiosity for mathematics, sparked during my secondary school years when I excelled in the subject and developed a lasting passion for problem-solving. This interest guided me to pursue a Bachelor of Science with Education at Makerere University, where I majored in Mathematics and minored in Economics.

Educational Background

During my undergraduate studies, I was particularly drawn to applied mathematics through courses such as Biomathematics, Statistical Inference, and Linear Programming. These subjects helped me understand how mathematical tools can be used to address real-world challenges, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when modelling and data-driven decision-making became essential. My academic performance and dedication enabled me to successfully complete my degree and prepared me for advanced studies in this field.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of L’Aquila and the University of Hamburg?

My preparation for further education was both academic and practical. I prepared for my application by building a strong academic background in applied mathematics, particularly in modelling and optimization. My participation in the Modelling Camp at the University of Hamburg gave me hands-on experience in solving real-world problems using mathematical tools. Additionally, attending the HARMO23 Conference on Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling exposed me to current research and applications in environmental modelling. These experiences helped me align my research interests with the program and strengthened my readiness for advanced research. Before the offer, I networked with students who had already been admitted to the program ahead of me, which gave me insight into how to approach the application process. I also applied to several opportunities before receiving a positive response, which taught me resilience and determination. Throughout this process, I carefully prepared all necessary documents, including my motivation letter, CV, transcripts, and passport.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

At the time of applying, I was not holding any other scholarship offers, but I became aware of several opportunities through my applications, which broadened my understanding of available academic pathways.

What Drew You to Choose These Countries to Pursue Your Degree?

I chose to pursue my studies in Europe, particularly in Italy and Germany, because of the strong academic environment, access to quality education, and relatively affordable cost of study compared to other regions. Studying in these countries has also given me the opportunity to experience multicultural environments and interact with students from diverse backgrounds.

What Were Some of the Challenges You Faced as an International Student, Particularly Regarding Living Costs or Part-time Work Opportunities?

As an international student, one of the main challenges I faced was adapting to a new environment, including differences in culture and living costs. Managing expenses while studying required careful planning. Additionally, navigating part-time work opportunities and balancing them with academic responsibilities required discipline. However, these challenges helped me develop resilience, adaptability, and better time management skills.

Looking Back, Would You Recommend Studying Here for International Students Seeking Affordable Higher Education?

Reflecting on my experience, I would recommend studying in these countries to international students seeking affordable and high-quality education. The institutions provide strong academic training, exposure to research, and opportunities for personal growth. My experience so far has been enriching, both academically and culturally, and has prepared me well for future research and career opportunities.

How is Your Experience at the University of L’Aquila and the University of Hamburg?

At my current institution, classes are conducted in English, which makes it accessible for international students. The universities also offer support through a pre-master program that helps to bridge the academic gap before the official start of the main program and orientations to help students adapt. Academically, I would rate the institutions highly due to their emphasis on research, practical learning, and collaboration.

What Did You Pursue After Your Studies?

Looking ahead, I aim to pursue further research, particularly through a PhD, and contribute to the field of applied mathematics by developing models that address real-world challenges.
