The Journey


I am Dr. Md. Nurul Islam, currently serving as a Deputy Librarian (Additional Director) and Faculty Member (Adjunct) at the International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC), Bangladesh. I am also a Research Fellow at Shinawatra University in Thailand and a Lincoln Global Post-Doctoral Researcher at Lincoln University College, Malaysia (2025). My career has been shaped by a deep passion for library and information science (LIS), aiming to contribute significantly to both academia and the profession. I pursued further education in LIS, driven by my belief in its potential to enhance learning, information management, and digital transformation. After completing my Ph.D. in Library, Information, and Archives Management from Nanjing University, China (2024), I now focus on advancing the digital transformation of government public libraries in Bangladesh.

Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) Details

I was honored to receive a fully-funded Ph.D. scholarship from Nanjing University, China, through the prestigious Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC). This scholarship covered my tuition, accommodation, and living expenses. Nanjing University is ranked 103 globally by QS (2024), and my dissertation focused on "Digital Transformation of Government Public Library Services in Bangladesh," which explores the challenges, opportunities, and strategic frameworks for sustainable development in the public library sector.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

Yes, I have been fortunate to receive several other prestigious scholarships and fellowships throughout my academic journey. These include:

  • Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Malaya (2026)
  • Fully Funded Participation in the MSCA Postdoctoral Writing Camp at Tallinn University, Estonia (2025)
  • World Health Summit 2022 Fellowship (Berlin, Germany)

Educational Background

I completed my Ph.D. at Nanjing University, where my research focused on digital transformation in public libraries. My M.Phil. degree was obtained from the National University of Bangladesh in 2017, with a GPA of 3.61. I also completed an MSS in Information Science & Library Management from the Asian University of Bangladesh in 2013 (CGPA: 3.69). My academic path, with a solid foundation in LIS, has prepared me well for research and applying technology to improve library services and information management systems.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Nanjing University?

Finding Information About Scholarships and Nanjing University

I conducted extensive research on scholarships, especially those offered by universities and international bodies such as the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), and other educational exchanges, by browsing through university websites, scholarship portals, and academic networking platforms like ResearchGate and LinkedIn.

Standardized Tests

I did not need to take standardized tests like the GRE or GMAT for my scholarship application. However, I had to submit an IELTS score (5.5) for English proficiency as part of my application process.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)?

  • Application Process: I carefully reviewed all the eligibility criteria for the CSC scholarship and other post-doctoral opportunities. I ensured that I met the academic qualifications and language proficiency requirements. In addition to academic documents, I submitted a comprehensive research proposal, emphasizing my interest in the digital transformation of library services and the development of a strategic framework for Bangladesh’s public libraries.
  • Preparing Documents: My application included academic transcripts, recommendation letters from professors, and a robust statement of purpose (SOP) that detailed my research goals and career aspirations.

How is (was) Your Experience at Nanjing University?

My experience at Nanjing University and Shinawatra University has been enriching and transformative. Both institutions provided a platform for groundbreaking research, where I collaborated with leading scholars in the field of LIS. I had the privilege of attending various workshops, seminars, and conferences that broadened my understanding of LIS practices globally, including advancements in digital libraries and information systems.

How Do You Rate Nanjing University Academically and Why?

Nanjing University is highly regarded globally, ranked 103rd by QS in 2024. The academic rigor and the university’s emphasis on research and innovation have been pivotal in shaping my academic journey. The support for research students, coupled with the faculty's expertise, made my academic experience at Nanjing University exceptionally enriching.

How Does Nanjing University Support International Students?

Nanjing University provides comprehensive support for international students, including language assistance, cultural exchange programs, and dedicated academic advisors. They also offer financial and logistical support for international students, making the transition to life in China smoother.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Mandarin?

All my classes at Nanjing University were conducted in English, which allowed me to engage with international students and faculty.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically Not Knowing Mandarin?

As the language of instruction is English, international students do not face any academic challenges due to the language barrier. However, knowing basic Chinese can be helpful for daily life outside of the academic environment.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

My application stood out due to my strong academic background, practical experience in library management, and a clear research focus on library services.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would start my preparations earlier to give myself more time for thorough research on scholarship opportunities. Additionally, I would seek more guidance from academic mentors to strengthen my research proposal.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice would be to carefully read the eligibility criteria, tailor your application to the scholarship's specific goals, and ensure that your research proposal clearly reflects your academic and professional aspirations. Networking with current or former scholarship recipients can also provide valuable insights into the application process.
