The Journey
Clara Mundia, Ph.D.
I am a senior geospatial research professional with 15+ years’ experience in the application of geo-analytical techniques in research projects to inform and drive social impact in the development of regions and vulnerable populations. I have an interest in the human–environment nexus, e.g., climate change, water supply, food security & natural resources, and have dedicated my career to advancing sustainable development in Africa and beyond.
AAUW International Fellowship Details
I was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, and hold a doctorate in Environmental Resources and Policy from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Early in my doctoral journey, I applied to and was awarded $20,000 through the International Fellowship from AAUW. As one of 50 recipients worldwide, the International Fellowship funds full-time study in the United States by women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the AAUW International Fellowship?
Applying for the scholarship/fellowship was very thorough. I was required to provide details around the proposed research, my background and education, funding and income sources, and justification that my study satisfied their criteria. I also had to include some supportive documents as evidence to strengthen my case. The application process required a meticulous approach, and I even had my mentor review and advise on how to highlight the most significant bits of my story. Having that second set of eyes was valuable!
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe that my application stood out to the donors for two reasons. Firstly, both my profile and my research study aligned well with the AAUW criteria, and secondly, I provided a very genuine statement that demonstrated my passion and dedication to empowering African women beyond the research I was doing, a passion I still carry many years later.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice to those seeking scholarships is to focus on opportunities that best resonate with you. While it can be tempting to cast a wide net, it dilutes your credibility. Present your best self, honestly and compellingly, and let your dedication speak for itself.
