The Journey

Dia dhuit! My name is Christine; I’m originally from Jakarta, Indonesia, but I now call Galway, Ireland, my second home. Although I was born and raised in Indonesia’s bustling capital, my heart has always been drawn to nature and the serenity of exploring the great outdoors, which Ireland is very rich in.

My journey into science began with something deeply personal. Since I was a child, I watched my beloved father battle type 2 diabetes, a disease that drastically altered his life and brought painful complications. Witnessing his struggles inspired me to make a promise to myself: I would dedicate my life to finding a cure. This promise fueled my decision to pursue a degree in pharmacy. My path wasn’t easy. As the fourth of five children, my father’s worsening condition during the time I entered university placed a financial strain on my family. I had to work hard not only in my studies but also in securing scholarships to fund my education. This experience sparked my passion for advocating for students in financial need, and I became actively involved in supporting others who faced similar challenges.

Even as I completed my pharmacy degree, I knew I wanted to continue on to a PhD, but I also knew that preparing for scholarships and applications required resources. So, I worked for a while at a stem cell research institute in Jakarta, where I gained valuable experience that deepened my commitment to finding new treatments. I was awarded a scholarship for a master’s program in China, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans. Instead, I returned to Indonesia and worked in the life sciences industry, this time on the manufacturing side rather than research. Combining my experience in both manufacturing and research, I discovered the ideal next step: a master’s program in Cellular Manufacturing and Therapy at the University of Galway, Ireland.

That master’s program not only enriched my skills but also helped me find the perfect PhD supervisor. Today, I’m proud to be a PhD student at the University of Galway, once again on a scholarship, and continuing to work towards my childhood promise: to make a meaningful contribution in the fight against diabetes.

Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES) Details

I felt grateful to be selected by the Higher Education Authority of Ireland for the prestigious Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES) for the 2022/2023 academic year. This award, designed for non-Irish and non-EU students, offered me an incredible opportunity to pursue my master’s degree in Ireland. The scholarship covered full tuition fees and €10,000 stipend to support my living expenses. Beyond the financial support, one of the most rewarding aspects was the chance to connect with 59 other inspiring scholars from around the world, culminating in a memorable gathering that celebrated our shared journey and achievements.

Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?

I have currently continuing my studies since the 2023 academic year for a doctoral degree. The Hardiman Scholarship is a funding offered by the University of Galway foundation, which supports around 20 outstanding Irish and international students each year as they begin their doctoral studies at this university.

Educational Background

I completed my bachelor's degree in pharmacy and continued with the pharmacist professional program a year later at the University of Indonesia. My GPA was 3.3 out of 4.0. While this may not be considered particularly high, perhaps just around the minimum required for most scholarships, it shows that you shouldn’t be discouraged by GPA concerns alone. More importantly, my education has thoroughly equipped me for a career as a pharmacist, whether in industry, research, or clinical practice.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

In general, if you want to apply for any scholarship, having proof of English language proficiency is essential. For my application, I took the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test. As an Indonesian, I found the test quite challenging, since we don’t actively use English in daily conversations, even though we study it in school. To prepare, I enrolled in a specialized IELTS preparation course for a month, which helped me achieve a score that met the requirements for both the university and the scholarship.

Honestly, Ireland was never on my list of target study destinations; I had always focused on Asian countries because they’re closer to Indonesia. I actually discovered the opportunity to study in Ireland through Instagram, probably because of the algorithm showing me relevant posts. On a whim, I decided to apply for it alongside my other applications to universities in Asia.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES)?

It took me several years of experience and valuable feedback from others to refine and perfect my application documents. Preparing these documents is crucial, especially for applicants from non-English-speaking countries; we need to ensure everything is accurately translated into English. As I mentioned earlier, meeting English proficiency requirements is also essential. One of the most important documents is the statement of purpose, as it helps people who don’t know you understand your strengths and why you deserve the opportunity. To improve my application, I often sought advice and feedback from experienced people around me. After going through this process a few times, it eventually became second nature, as the steps are quite similar for each application.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

In my view, when applying for the GOI-IES, it’s important to align your proposed study with the goals of the Irish government, particularly their aim to expand Ireland’s academic reach to a global audience. Your chosen field of study should also reflect how it meets Ireland’s needs by helping to develop talented individuals who can contribute directly to the country or make an impact internationally. Additionally, you should highlight how your previous education and professional experience will support and enhance these contributions.
