The Journey
My name is Chhoeurm Phearun, and I’m currently pursuing a Master of International Business and Cross-border E-commerce at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing, supported by the prestigious Chinese Government Scholarship under the Silk Road Scholarship Program. I am originally from Cambodia, a country in Southeast Asia known for its unique cultures, friendly people, and thousands of ancient temples, including Angkor Wat – the world's largest religious monument and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Educational Background
I obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration in Hospitality and Tourism Management from the University of Cambodia, graduating with a GPA of 3.83 out of 4. Simultaneously, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English for Professional Communication from the Royal University of Phnom Penh. During my academic years, I was selected for a one-week cultural exchange program at the National University of Malaysia under the CIMB Young ASEAN Leaders Program, funded by the CIMB Foundation, and a two-week STEP Sociovation Forum at Singapore University of Social Sciences, funded by the Temasek Foundation. Additionally, I completed two internships, participated in voluntary work, and engaged in various youth programs as part of my extracurricular activities.
With nearly three years of professional experience in the Market Research and Monitoring & Evaluation sectors, working for a private company and a non-profit organization, I have developed a strong interest in data analysis and sustainable business development. These experiences have fueled my passion for assisting Cambodian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in adapting to the digital era by implementing environmentally sustainable business models through data-driven strategies. According to the 8th Annual NBC Macroeconomic Conference’s report in 2021, SMEs represent approximately 70% of employment, contributing 58% to Cambodia’s GDP. Simultaneously, Cambodia’s e-commerce sector is experiencing rapid growth, driven by digital adoption, mobile payments, a young consumer base, social commerce, and government support for online businesses. Therefore, to gain expertise in this dynamic field, I decided to pursue my current Master’s degree.

This highly competitive scholarship provides opportunities for international students, especially those with strong academic records, to pursue master’s degrees at China’s top universities, offering world-class education, cultural immersion, and unparalleled academic opportunities. The scholarship has provided me with the full tuition fees, monthly stipend, accommodation, and health insurance.
I am deeply honored to have been awarded the Chinese Government Scholarship for the 2024 intake, enabling me to pursue a Master of International Business and Cross-border E-commerce at the University of International Business and Economics.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of International Business and Economics?
To prepare for the application process, I first explored the university’s website and researched programs that aligned with my goals, particularly the program curricula. Additionally, I reviewed the required documents for admission, the university’s background, and faculty expertise. The University of International Business and Economics is one of the most prestigious institutions, renowned for its economics, business, and academic research, all of which align strongly with my goals. Located in Beijing, I believe it will immerse me in the business culture and sustainable development practices.
As an advantage, I attended an information session organized by a group of former CSC scholarship recipients in Cambodia and sought advice from several CSC alumni before I began my application for this scholarship."
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship?
After reviewing all the requirements, I began preparing the necessary documents. Since I chose an English-taught program for my master’s studies, the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Test, also known as the 'Mandarin Level Exam,' was not required. However, I needed to submit an English Proficiency Certificate, verified by my previous university, confirming that my undergraduate courses were conducted in English.
While the IELTS score is not mandatory for the Chinese Government Scholarship, many universities in China may require proof of English proficiency for programs taught in English. In such cases, you may need to provide an IELTS, TOEFL, or other accepted forms of English proficiency certificates. It is essential to check the specific requirements of the university and program you are applying to in order to ensure all required documents are submitted.
The most critical component of my application was the Personal Statement. I ensured that it thoroughly conveyed why I am an ideal candidate and what positive contributions I would make if selected
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe several key factors contributed to making my application stand out. Firstly, my work experience, intended major, and long-term career goals are directly aligned with the scholarship’s objectives. Additionally, my academic achievements demonstrate a strong foundation in my field of study, while my active involvement in extracurricular activities highlights my leadership, teamwork, and dedication. These elements reflect my commitment to both personal and professional growth, positioning me as an exceptional candidate for this scholarship.
Nevertheless, I also recognize that other factors, such as thorough document preparation, play a crucial role in the selection process.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to repeat the process, I would start my preparations earlier to ensure sufficient time for in-depth research on the scholarship requirements and timeline. I would also connect with more past recipients and seek a mentor for valuable guidance, gaining a clearer understanding of how to improve my application. Additionally, I would carefully review all documents to guarantee their accuracy and prevent any last-minute issues.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice to those seeking scholarship opportunities is straightforward, based on the points I personally experienced. Begin your scholarship search early and ensure you meet all the requirements. Pay close attention to deadlines, and make sure your application is organized and complete. Research each scholarship’s objectives and align your experience and aspirations accordingly. Seek feedback from mentors or peers to improve your chances and avoid common mistakes.
Stay motivated, as it drives you forward, and maintain a strong commitment, as it helps you stay focused on your goals throughout the process. I wish you all the best in securing a scholarship that supports your academic and professional goals and hope it opens doors for your future success.
