The Journey
My name is Bint e Hawa, and I’m from Pakistan. I completed my Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in Sustainable Agriculture, Food Production, and Food Sciences, a program that has taken me across Europe, studying in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and working with people from all corners of the world. This journey has not only deepened my scientific expertise but has also been a deeply personal transformation. It challenged me, inspired me, and ignited a stronger passion in me to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient food system.
Educational Background
Before joining Erasmus Mundus, I earned my Bachelor’s in Dietetics and Nutritional Sciences in Pakistan. During my undergraduate years, I already knew I wanted to go beyond borders, to explore how different parts of the world approach food security and innovation. I worked on diverse projects, did a few internships, and presented at various international conferences. These experiences gave me early exposure to global food challenges and research communication. They helped me develop strong research and presentation skills and built my confidence to step into a multicultural, interdisciplinary program like Erasmus Mundus. I was ready, not just academically, but also mentally, to adapt, learn, and grow.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Erasmus Scholarship?
Erasmus Mundus was always my top choice because of its international exposure and academic excellence. While I explored other options like DAAD and Fulbright, Erasmus offered something unique: the chance to live and learn in different countries, in a truly global classroom. I knew it was competitive, only the top few percent get selected, but I put a lot of effort into showing my motivation, academic achievements, and research experiences. I believe what helped me stand out was my passion for sustainable food, experience in food research, and clear career goals.
Could You Briefly Discuss the Erasmus Mundus Program You Pursued and the Specific Field of Study It Focused On?
This program was a perfect match for my interests. It focused on sustainable food production, biotechnology, and nutrition, blending theory and practice across Europe. What I loved most was the interdisciplinary nature; one day we were studying microbiome interactions, the next we were working on functional food design. My Master’s thesis, on edible insects and their use in the food industry, was not just a scientific exploration; it was my way of contributing to the future of food.
How Did the Cost of Living Vary Across the Countries You Studied In? Which Country Was the Most Affordable or Expensive, and How Did You Manage Financially?
Each country had its own rhythm and cost of living. Slovakia was more budget-friendly, while Prague was beautiful but a bit pricier. But the Erasmus Mundus scholarship covered my needs, and I learned how to manage well. I budgeted, prioritized experiences over luxuries, and took advantage of student resources. The financial support allowed me to fully focus on my studies and personal growth.
Did You Face Any Language Barriers, and if So, How Did You Overcome Them? Did the Language of Instruction Change From One Country to Another?
Yes, there were language barriers, but they were part of the adventure. While classes were in English, everyday life involved Czech, Slovak, or even other languages while traveling. At first, it was challenging, but I used translation apps and made some local friends who helped me along the way. Over time, I started picking up phrases, and with that, a deeper connection to local culture.
Would You Recommend the Erasmus Mundus Program to Others? What Advice Would You Give to Someone Considering This Scholarship?
Without a doubt, yes! Erasmus Mundus changed my life. It broadened my academic horizons, shaped my worldview, and gave me friends, mentors, and memories across continents. If you're someone who is curious, driven, and passionate about making a global impact, this is the opportunity for you. My advice? Start early, be honest in your application, and let your passion shine through. This program is not just about grades; it's about your story and your vision for the future.
Looking Back, Would You Have Done Anything Differently During Your Time in the Program?
If I could go back, I’d dive even deeper into networking, research collaborations, and language learning. I would have explored more local initiatives, engaged more in international conferences, and captured more memories! But even with all that, I have no regrets. This journey has shaped the person and professional I am today.
