The Journey
My name is Biniyam Aschalew, and I was born and raised in Ethiopia. I completed my undergraduate studies at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) as a GKS scholarship recipient. Iʼve always been interested in computers, mathematics, and technology in general, so I chose to major in Computer Science and minor in Industrial and Systems Engineering.
Global Korea Scholarship Details
The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is a program that supports undergraduate and graduate students from selected countries to study in South Korea. It is managed by the National Institute for International Education NIIED under the Korean Ministry of Education. The scholarship includes a 6-month to 1-year language training period followed by the main degree program. Monthly support is around USD 700 for undergraduates and USD 800 for masterʼs students.
There are two application tracks:
Embassy Track: Apply through the Korean Embassy in your country first, then to individual universities after being nominated.
University Track: Apply directly to a university that accepts GKS applicants.

Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?
At KAIST, I also received the Hanseong Scholarship, awarded to students from countries that were part of the UN coalition in the Korean War. KAIST also offers other merit-based and need-based scholarships that students can apply for.
Educational Background
Before KAIST, I attended Excel Academy in my hometown, Adama, where I ranked at the top of my class throughout high school. I also scored highly on the Ethiopian University Entrance Examination, which helped strengthen my university applications.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to KAIST?
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
I learned about the GKS scholarship through recommendations from my teachers. I applied through the Embassy Track. Since the medium of instruction in my country is English, I didnʼt need to submit an English proficiency test, nor did I take standardized exams like the SAT or GRE.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the GKS Scholarship?
The first stage of the application involved document submission, so I gathered and authenticated all required materials, such as my high school transcript and national exam results. I also wrote an essay based on the given prompts. For the second stage, which was an in-person interview, I prepared by researching my preferred university and academic program.
How is (was) Your Experience at KAIST?
My experience at KAIST was transformative. I met brilliant students from all over the world, which broadened my perspective on science and engineering. The environment encouraged me to work hard and perform at my best. I also had the chance to take part in research as an undergraduate, which shaped my academic interests. Overall, it was a highly rewarding experience.
How Do You Rate KAIST Academically and Why?
KAIST consistently ranks among the top universities in the world (Top 50), and I believe this is well deserved. It offers a strong learning and research environment with excellent resources. I would rate it very highly, especially in STEM and natural sciences.
How Does KAIST Support International Students?
Yes, KAIST has an International Scholar and Student Services (ISSS) office dedicated to assisting international students in all aspects of life. The campus also has an active and welcoming international community with various student clubs and associations.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean?
Most classes are taught in English, and all the required courses Iʼve taken so far have been in English as well. Although a few electives are offered in Korean, international students can comfortably complete their studies entirely in English.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing Korean?
On campus, you can manage perfectly well without knowing Korean. However, outside the university, many people may not speak English, so learning some basic Korean is definitely helpful for daily life.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my consistent academic performance, strong national exam results, and participation in mathematics competitions helped my application stand out.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Nothing specific comes to mind
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Take enough time to write thoughtful essays and prepare well for the interview. Focus on maintaining good grades and, if possible, participate in academic competitions to show your potential. Taking standardized exams like the SAT can also strengthen your application.
