The Journey

Hi! My name is Ayesha Javaid, and I’m a psychology graduate from Pakistan currently pursuing my master's degree in Psychology with a specialization in School Psychology and Counseling at the University of Pécs, Hungary. I'm studying here as a recipient of the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship, which has given me the opportunity to study what I love in an international setting.

Can You Share the Details of the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship?

I received the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship, which is funded by the Hungarian Government and coordinated by Tempus Public Foundation. It covers full tuition, monthly stipend, health insurance, and accommodation support. I’m currently studying at the University of Pécs, one of the most reputable universities in Hungary. It was my top choice because of its reputable psychology department and multicultural student environment. This scholarship has not only lifted the financial burden but also opened doors to a new academic and cultural experience for me.

What Is Your Educational Background?

I completed my BS in Psychology from Government College University, Lahore. My final year thesis focused on the psychological effects of domestic violence among women, a topic that really shaped my future interests in mental health support systems. During my studies, I also had the opportunity to intern at Fountain House Lahore, where I observed and supported individuals in psychiatric rehabilitation. I was also actively involved in student societies and participated in volunteering initiatives with both national and international organizations, which helped me grow personally and professionally. To further prepare for graduate studies, I took online certifications to enhance my skills.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Pécs?

I started by shortlisting countries that offered fully funded scholarships for psychology and social science programs. Hungary stood out because of the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship, which didn’t require standardized test scores like GRE or IELTS for applicants from English-medium universities. I spent a lot of time exploring university websites, Facebook groups, and scholarship blogs. Once I finalized the University of Pécs, I focused on tailoring my application around the specific program I was applying for. I also reached out to past recipients to get advice, which was incredibly helpful.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship?

I started by making a checklist of all the required documents, including transcripts, recommendation letters, a medical certificate, proof of English proficiency, and a well-crafted motivation letter. For the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship, applicants from Pakistan are required to take the HAT (Higher Education Aptitude Test) and get nominated by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). I prepared for the test by reviewing key areas like analytical reasoning and quantitative skills.

I knew my motivation letter would be the integral part of the application, so I spent a lot of time reflecting on my goals and how the program aligned with them. I gave myself plenty of time to revise and refine everything before submission.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

What truly strengthened my application was the clear connection between my academic background, personal experiences, and the program I was applying to. I didn’t just say I was passionate about psychology, I backed it up with real experiences. I also wrote my motivation letter in a very honest and reflective way. I wasn’t trying to sound perfect, I just wanted the reviewers to see my genuine interest and commitment.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

Honestly, I gave it my best effort at every step, and things worked out well in the end. Of course, there’s always room for improvement, but I’m proud of how I managed the process and stayed committed. Sometimes trusting yourself and staying focused is the key, and that’s what helped me succeed.

What Advice Would You Give to Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

  • Start early and keep track of deadlines.
  • Write a motivation letter that is authentic and specific; don’t just recycle generic templates.
  • Show how your background connects to the course and how it fits into your long-term goals.
  • Don’t hesitate to reach out to people for help, whether it’s your professors for recommendations or alumni for feedback.
  • And lastly, don’t self-reject or hold back; apply to every opportunity you come across. Don’t be afraid of failure; each attempt is a step forward, so keep going and stay persistent.
