The Journey

I am Ataur Rahman, originally from Noakhali, a southeastern region of Bangladesh. After completing 8th grade, I moved to Dhaka, the capital city, to pursue my education and continued my journey there until I completed my university degree.

Following my graduation, I started to work with BRAC, the world’s largest non-governmental organization, where I gained valuable hands-on experience implementing development initiatives in rural Bangladesh. Later, I joined the Human Development Research Centre (HDRC), a reputed research firm in Dhaka. There, I worked on policy-level research, which broadened my understanding of development from an analytical perspective. This journey from grassroots engagement to policy research has allowed me to witness the development dynamics of Bangladesh up close.

I was eager to hone my knowledge with cutting-edge tools to approach modern development challenges. Therefore, I enrolled in a master’s degree in Sustainable Development Management at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Germany. This program is ideally designed for a two-year tenure. Additionally, it offers a limited number of fully funded scholarships each year in two phases. I was granted the scholarship for the summer of 2024. This MA degree, along with a fully funded scholarship, allows me to experience high-quality education in a truly competitive and international setting.

Scholarship Details

I have been awarded the DAAD scholarship under the EPOS (Development-Related Postgraduate Courses) program. This prestigious award provides comprehensive financial and academic support, including a monthly stipend, an annual research allowance, travel support within Germany, and two subsidized international airfare tickets. It also covers mandatory health insurance in Germany during my stay. At the beginning of the program, it includes a two-month German language course with accommodation. Additionally, it offers limited support for attending conferences, encouraging scholars to engage in academic networking and share their research. With this extensive support, the scholarship equips aspiring development professionals with the necessary tools and opportunities to explore, learn, and contribute meaningfully to addressing global development challenges.

Educational Background

I completed my bachelor’s degree in social welfare with First Class from the University of Dhaka, the leading public university in Bangladesh. Throughout my undergraduate studies, I was fortunate to be surrounded by some of the brightest minds and mentors whose guidance had a lasting impact on my personal and academic growth. For nearly a decade, I was actively involved with the Reading Club Trust, a knowledge-based organization in Dhaka. Through this platform, we organized educational events, facilitated university-level research and discussions, and regularly engaged with scholars and students. These experiences beyond the classroom played a vital role in shaping my own path. Interacting with individuals from various backgrounds broadened my understanding of development issues, helped me critically assess the strengths and gaps in Bangladesh’s development policies, and inspired me to contribute meaningfully to the country’s future.

I firmly believe that extracurricular and voluntary activities alongside formal education play a transformative role in preparing one for leadership in their respective fields.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences?

The application process for my university admission and scholarship progressed in parallel. I first applied for the DAAD EPOS scholarship, clearly stating my desired degree program and the reasons behind my choice. As part of the application, I submitted all the required documents, including the application form, a motivation letter, letters of reference, an employment certificate, my IELTS score, academic transcripts, and identification documents.

After being shortlisted, I was interviewed by the degree program at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. They nominated me to DAAD for further evaluation. After receiving final confirmation from the DAAD authorities about the scholarship, I proceeded with the formal university admission process using almost the same documents.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD EPOS Scholarship?

Initially, after completing my graduation studies, I was not fully familiar with the process of pursuing higher education abroad. However, I was determined to continue my studies with a fully funded scholarship. To achieve this, I created a structured plan and started building a personal database of scholarship opportunities from around the world. During this process, I came to know about the DAAD EPOS program. I realized that one of the key eligibility criteria for most globally competitive scholarships is having a specific number of hours of relevant professional experience aligned with the chosen field of study. At that time, I lacked sufficient experience.

Therefore, alongside my full-time job, I dedicated time to preparing for the IELTS exam and to thoroughly researching application procedures. I analyzed the eligibility criteria of my target programs and began actively developing the skills that would align with them. Once I had acquired the required level of professional experience and gathered all the necessary documents, I submitted my application to the EPOS program, following every step of the process carefully.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

In my view, two key factors contributed to making my application strong.

The first factor is the right combination. This can be compared to the equilibrium point of a supply-demand curve. On one side is the “demand”—the specific skills, qualifications, and experiences that the degree program is looking for. This demand can only be truly understood through deep research into the program structure and objectives. I also sought extensive support from past scholarship recipients.

On the other side is the “supply”, which I could offer as an applicant. I took great care to align my experiences and capabilities to meet those demands. My professional experience in NGOs and research institutions gave me a strong foundation that matched the focus of the Sustainable Development Management program. Additionally, my recommendation letter from my former supervisor, who has a relevant professional background, further strengthened my application. Therefore, reaching the equilibrium point is essential for making the application stand out.

The second factor is personalizing the application. I connected all the dots of my life into one cohesive story. This included my academic background, professional experience, and future aspirations. Crafting this narrative in a compelling and structured way was essential. I believe this skill of storytelling has been shaped over my three years of journey in the application process.

Of course, there might also be other external factors that may influence outcomes, things beyond our control. But I believe that focusing on what we can control, preparation, alignment, and authenticity, makes all the difference.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

One thing I would do differently is start preparing earlier. Spending more time to understand the entire process and be fully informed. It helps to avoid mistakes and keep the documents updated. Additionally, I would make a financial plan for the application fee and save money in advance.

I would also keep myself patient and confident. Securing a fully funded scholarship is highly competitive. It's natural to feel worried or even hopeless at times during this application process. I would trust the process, keep learning, and stay focused. The right opportunity would come at the right time.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

From my experiences, I would share three points.

First, start the application process as early as possible. Keep in mind that it’s a long journey. The application itself is a learning experience. Over time, it helps to understand what makes an application more efficient and effective.

Second, proper planning is crucial. Thoroughly research the degree program, critically assess how it aligns with your strengths, and identify the connection between your background and the program’s focus. Continuously refine your motivation letter.

Three, apply to multiple opportunities. Use your time wisely and make sure to explore all options. The right match and combination of opportunities will help you achieve your desired outcomes.
