The Journey
Hi, I’m Aryan Vadera from Delhi, India. I’ve always been someone who enjoys staying active and trying out new things. I tend to lose interest if I’m doing the same thing for too long, which is why I’m drawn to dynamic, ever-evolving fields like technology. I’m currently pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Science, majoring in Data Science. My interest in tech began back in high school when I built a small project to automate the cataloging system of our community library. It was a simple idea, but it sparked a deeper curiosity about how we can use data and automation to solve real problems. That’s when I knew I wanted to explore this path further and hopefully one day build something of my own as a tech entrepreneur.
I’m grateful to be studying at Deakin University on the Vice-Chancellor’s Meritorious 100% Scholarship, which covers my entire tuition, valued at around AUD 120,000. Before committing to Deakin, I was also awarded the Next Genius Full Ride Scholarship, which would have allowed me to pursue an undergraduate degree in Massachusetts with full tuition support worth USD 240,000. While both opportunities were incredible, I chose Deakin for its forward-thinking approach and practical course structure.
Educational Background
I completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) with a score of 40. My higher-level subjects were Mathematics, Physics, and Economics, while I also studied Computer Science, English, and Spanish. I’ve always been drawn to the sciences, mainly because they help explain the world in logical, practical ways. I was never someone who enjoyed memorizing facts; I preferred understanding how things work and applying that knowledge. Outside of academics, I spent most of my school years playing sports, volunteering, and participating in theatre. I was also actively involved in leadership roles and helped run various societies on campus, which gave me a great balance between academic learning and real-life experience.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Deakin University?
I’ve always believed in building a strong, balanced profile over time. Since childhood, I’ve enjoyed exploring a mix of interests, from academics to extracurriculars and community initiatives. When it came to applying to universities, I tried to reflect that balance in my application. I focused on being genuine and letting my story come through naturally. It wasn’t about trying to sound perfect; it was about showing consistent effort, curiosity, and the willingness to grow.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Vice-Chancellor’s Meritorious 100% Scholarship?
To be honest, I didn’t do any special prep just for the scholarships. The application process itself had around six rounds. The initial ones were focused on my background, what I’d done so far, and how that shaped who I am. These were less about preparation and more about being honest and reflective. The later rounds were more in-depth and covered current affairs, long-term goals, and how I saw myself contributing to society. One of the rounds even involved a debate that connected my area of study to global issues. I think it’s important to not only be aware of what’s happening in the world but also have some clarity on how you want to be part of it. You don’t need a detailed life plan, but it helps to have a sense of direction and purpose.
How Do You Rate Deakin University Academically and Why?
I wouldn't give a traditional rating, but I’ve really appreciated the academic environment at Deakin. The faculty here focuses on genuine understanding rather than rote assessments. Every subject is divided into lectures and workshops, which means you get both theoretical knowledge and hands-on application. For my course, assessments are mostly assignment-based, which I think is more relevant in today’s world, especially in fields like data science and tech, where problem-solving and implementation matter more than memorization. They also teach you how to use generative AI tools responsibly, rather than discouraging them, which feels very practical and future-facing, especially in the field of Computer Science.
How Does Deakin University Support International Students?
Deakin does a great job of making international students feel at home, since it has a large international student population. There are dedicated clubs and societies for students from different countries. They also organize cultural festivals, social events, and group trips that help build a sense of community. Each country has its own student society, and they frequently hold events that celebrate food, music, and traditions. There are support services too: academic, career, and mental health, which are easily accessible and genuinely helpful.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I think what helped was the balance in my profile. Academically, I had strong scores - 40 in IB and 96% in CBSE for Grade 10. Beyond that, I played sports at the school and state level, including cricket, tennis, and table tennis. I also played guitar, did theatre with formal certifications, and founded and led two student-run clubs in school. I was involved in community work too, including opening a small school for underprivileged kids and earning the Silver medal of the International Award for Young People. I was also nominated for the Young Changemakers Delhi Award in 2022. It wasn’t any single thing but rather the mix of experiences and the story they told about who I am and what I care about.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I could go back, I’d probably document my experiences better, whether through a journal or even just saving small reflections. When the time comes to write essays or talk about yourself, those little details really help. Sometimes we forget how much we’ve grown or what we’ve learned unless we make an effort to track it.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
It might sound cliché, but the most important thing is to be yourself and be confident in your story. A good profile isn’t built overnight; it’s the result of consistent effort over time. But it’s not just about listing achievements. What really matters is what those experiences mean to you, how they shape you, and what you learn from them. Focus on that. The scholarship committee values high achievers, but what truly sets applicants apart is the ability to reflect on their experiences, show purpose in their journey, and demonstrate a genuine commitment to growth.
