The Journey
My name is Arna. I have a bachelor's degree in Robotics and Mechatronics and am currently pursuing a master's in Brain and Data Science through the NeuroData Erasmus Mundus program. As part of this program, I have been studying in Croatia and Finland.
Educational Background
I gained both research and international experience during my undergraduate studies. I studied at a multilingual university and attended conferences, which I believe significantly helped me get it and adapt to the multi-country experience of Erasmus Mundus.
How Did you Prepare to Apply for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?
I only applied to scholarships that included university placements. First, I prepared my CV, then I tailored and adapted my motivation letter to each Erasmus program I applied to. I chose Erasmus Mundus because it offered a great opportunity to study in an international community, travel, and explore different research areas.
Could You Briefly Discuss the Erasmus Mundus Program You Pursued and the Specific Field of Study It Focused On?
My Erasmus Mundus program, NeuroData, is quite unique as it combines brain and data science. During our studies, we learn both neuroscience and computer science. My thesis focuses on decoding emotional states using brain and neurophysiological recordings.
How Did the Cost of Living Vary Across the Countries You Studied In? Which Country Was the Most Affordable or Expensive, and How Did You Manage Financially?
The cost of living varied significantly across countries, with Finland being the most expensive. However, there are many financial support options for students, including affordable yet comfortable dormitories in the city centre and student discounts for meals. I manage my finances carefully, and since the Erasmus Mundus scholarship is generous, it covers not only my living expenses but also allows me to travel occasionally to other cities and countries.
Did You Face Any Language Barriers, and if So, How Did You Overcome Them? Did the Language of Instruction Change From One Country to Another?
All Erasmus Mundus universities have international students, and the primary language of instruction is English. Most people outside the university also speak English, so I did not face any significant language barriers. Additionally, I found Russian-speaking communities, which helped me since Russian is my second language.
Would You Recommend the Erasmus Mundus Program to Others? What Advice Would You Give to Someone Considering This Scholarship?
I would definitely recommend the Erasmus Mundus program. It is a unique opportunity, as most programs are interdisciplinary, exposing students to different subjects and perspectives. Additionally, it is fully funded, and the scholarship is more than enough to cover living expenses and travel. Lastly, being part of an international community enriches both academic and personal experiences and helps in future career opportunities.
Looking Back, Would You Have Done Anything Differently During Your Time in the Program?
I don’t think so—everything has been great so far, and I wouldn't change anything.
