The Journey

My name is Andrea Bergula Saises, and I come from the province of Samar in the Philippines. I am currently in my fourth year, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary, under the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme. My interest in pursuing a field in medicine stems from my desire to contribute meaningfully to people’s health and well-being—as I wrote in my motivation letter, “to serve with passion and purpose”. I’ve always been fascinated by the balance between science and compassion that the profession embodies, and studying abroad has given me a broader global perspective not just in healthcare, but even in the way I perceive life. And recently, as a graduating student, I was honored to receive the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Student Excellence Award 2025, a prestigious recognition given to outstanding scholars who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, active engagement in research, and meaningful leadership and participation in both university and community initiatives.

Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Details

The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme is Hungary’s most prestigious higher education scholarship, established by the Hungarian Government in 2013. It offers opportunities for high-achieving international students from over 90 countries, based on bilateral education agreements between Hungary and the governments of the sending countries. Under this scholarship, I am studying at Semmelweis University, one of Hungary’s leading medical universities. The provision of the scholarship includes:

Tuition-free education — exemption from paying tuition fees o Monthly stipend of HUF 43,700 (approx. EUR 110) to support living expenses o Accommodation support — either free dormitory housing or a HUF 40,000/month contribution (approx. EUR 100)

Medical insurance, Entitlements to Social Security Benefits, including supplementary coverage up to HUF 65,000 (approx. EUR 160) per year

Educational Background

When I applied for the Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) Scholarship during the pandemic, I was already a second-year BS Biology major in Medical Biology student at De La Salle University. However, for the SH application, I only used my high school credentials: Senior High School grades from Centro Escolar University – Manila (STEM with a specialization in Caregiving)

and my Junior High School grades from St. Mary’s College of Catbalogan. As for my academic journey, I’ve earned a good percentage during my school years, and my background in science and healthcare gave me a strong foundation in pursuing Nursing.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Semmelweis University?

How Did You Find Information About the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship and Semmelweis University?

Interestingly, I first learned about the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship through a helpdesk email sent to my DLSU student account. At that time, I was feeling quite burned out from the online class setup during the pandemic. Then, on the very last day of the submission deadline (which I don’t recommend anyone do!), I decided to take a chance and submit my application. After that spontaneous decision, I began doing extensive research about the scholarship and the universities in Hungary. I joined Stipendium Hungaricum Facebook groups, where I connected with current scholars who generously shared their experiences and tips. I also reached out to Filipino students already studying in Hungary, asking them about the country’s education system and university life. What truly inspired me to pursue my studies there was learning how different Hungary’s education system is compared to the Philippines. Hungarian universities place a strong emphasis on practical learning. Each semester consists of 14 weeks of theoretical, practical, and seminar classes, where students are encouraged to attend, participate, and truly absorb knowledge. Unlike in the Philippines, where students often juggle multiple projects, homework, and other requirements, Hungary’s system is more straightforward; your final grade is based mainly on your end-of-semester examination. I genuinely appreciate this approach because it allows students to focus on mastering the subject matter and applying their knowledge, and to experience life other than academics, rather than being drowned by numerous academic tasks.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

For the Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) Scholarship, there are no standardized tests such as the IELTS, SAT, etc. Applicants from countries where English is the medium of instruction, like the Philippines, are not required to submit any English proficiency test scores. Instead, a certificate from your previous school confirming that English was the language of instruction is sufficient. The SH application process consists of three main phases:

Application Submission – Applicants must submit their documents through the DreamApply portal and their country’s sending partner simultaneously.

Interview with the Sending Partner – After the initial evaluation, shortlisted applicants are invited for an interview. This stage is very important, as it determines who will be officially nominated to the chosen universities in Hungary.

University Entrance Examination – Each university and program has its own admission requirements. The exam format may be written, oral, or both.

For my chosen program, BSc Nursing at Semmelweis University, I took a basic biology written entrance examination. Once I passed, my results were forwarded to the Tempus Public Foundation, which conducts the final selection for scholarship recipients. While the foundation does not publicly disclose its exact selection criteria, the decision is generally based on the nomination ranking from the sending partner, university entrance exam results, and the number of scholarship slots available for each country. The final ranking is done on an international scale.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship?

Applying during the pandemic was challenging due to limited office operations, making it difficult to secure the required documents. Still, I stayed persistent and made sure to complete every requirement. Academically, my background in Medical Biology helped me perform well in the entrance exam. For the interview, I focused on showing confidence, eagerness, and genuine interest in studying in Hungary. I also researched the program, the university, and the country preparation that reflected my determination and curiosity during the selection process.

How is (was) Your Experience at Semmelweis University?

Studying at Semmelweis University has been an incredible journey. It has provided not only professional growth but also personal development. The university has allowed me to gain hands-on experience in healthcare while also learning to adapt and thrive in a diverse environment. As one of Europe’s oldest and most respected medical universities, Semmelweis provides a strong foundation in healthcare, emphasizing both theory and hands-on practice. Beyond academics, living in Budapest has broadened my worldview and helped me build lifelong friendships with students from all over the world.

How Does Semmelweis University Support International Students?

While Semmelweis University offers an excellent academic experience, I think there is still room for improvement in supporting international students through extracurricular and integration programs. Compared to Hungarian students, international students sometimes have limited opportunities for cultural and social engagement.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Hungarian?

All our classes are conducted in English. However, as part of the Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) scholarship requirements, we are also required to complete Hungarian language courses, which may vary depending on the university and program. All our classes are conducted in English. However, as part of the Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) scholarship requirements, we are also required to complete Hungarian language courses, which may vary depending on the university and program. In my case, as a Nursing student, I am required to take six semesters of Hungarian language classes, covering both basic Hungarian and medical Hungarian. This is particularly important because, during our hospital placements, we often interact with patients—many of whom speak only Hungarian.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing Hungarian?

Generally, it’s manageable to live and study in Budapest without speaking Hungarian, as most locals understand basic English. However, learning the local language helps with daily interactions and builds stronger connections with the community. Locals also appreciate it when foreigners make an effort to learn their language, also it shows respect and cultural openness.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe what made my application stand out was my enthusiasm, determination, and clear sense of purpose. Beyond academic performance, I think the selection committee also looks for resilience; the ability to adapt, persevere, and live independently in a foreign country. My passion for learning and motivation to serve through healthcare were at the heart of my application. I wanted to show that I wasn’t just applying for a scholarship, but for an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. While my academic background gave me a strong foundation for the entrance examination, my interview preparation focused on my passion and purpose. During the process, I made sure to express my genuine eagerness to study in Hungary, my dedication to the field of Nursing, and my enthusiasm to step out of my comfort zone to embrace new experiences and challenges.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I could do something differently, I would have mentally prepared myself more for the realities of studying and living abroad. It’s not always flowers and butterflies—it’s not just about the excitement of being in Europe or exploring new places. I wish I had conditioned myself earlier to understand that this journey would also be challenging, and sometimes you will definitely miss home. Being away from your family, friends, comfort zone, and even your favorite food can be difficult, and those moments of homesickness do come unexpectedly. But I’ve learned that these feelings are completely normal and valid. They are part of the process of growth and self-discovery. I would have conditioned myself that, despite all the challenges, the amount of personal growth, independence, and resilience that comes with this experience is truly incomparable, and for that, I am deeply grateful and can say that applying for a scholarship to study abroad is one of the best decisions I have boldly chosen.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice is simple: just apply. Even if you feel unsure or think you’re not qualified enough, send that application anyway. Don’t self-exclude, don’t let self-doubt stop you. Let the committee decide—not your own fear, never reject yourself by not trying. One of the most haunting pain is the pain of inaction—wondering what could have been if you had just taken that one step. You are always where you’re meant to be, so take that leap of faith and submit that application. You might just surprise yourself with how far courage can take you.
