The Journey

Hi,

I am Alphonsa Baby, from Kerala, India. Currently, I am undertaking my PhD under the ARC Training Centre in Biosecurity at James Cook University, Queensland, Australia.

The pivotal stepping stone on this path was the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree in Plant Health in Sustainable Cropping Systems (2022-2024), during which I studied at the Universitat Politècnica de València in Spain and the University of Padua in Italy. I did my Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from Navsari Agricultural University in India.

My interest in this field comes from a strong desire to contribute to sustainable agriculture and food security. Through my research, I hope to develop more precise and environmentally friendly pest management strategies.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Details

Erasmus Mundus scholarship for European Master's Degree in Plant Health in Sustainable Cropping Systems 2022-2024. The European Union funds this scholarship and fully covers tuition, living expenses, travel, and insurance.

The programme spanned two universities:

Educational Background

I earned a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture from Navsari Agricultural University, India. Had a GPA of 8.8/10. In my bachelor's, I had various courses related to Sustainable agriculture, but it was the hands-on experiences in my final year that truly sparked my passion. In my final year, I worked on a project for the Vermicompost Unit and at research stations focused on environmentally friendly pest control strategies. These experiences ignited a curiosity that I knew I had to keep pursuing.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?

My preparation started with deep research, not just a surface-level read of the website, but a real effort to understand what the Erasmus Mundus programme was truly looking for. When I read the programme's aims and vision, I felt an immediate alignment with my own goals. That conviction made it so much easier to write my motivation letter, which I believe played a significant role in my selection.

Here's how I approached the application process:

  • Thoroughly researched the programme's objectives and matched them to my own academic and professional story.
  • Crafted a compelling motivation letter that authentically reflected my vision and genuine passion.
  • Gathered all supporting academic and experience documents that strengthened my CV.
  • Secured strong references from mentors who truly believed in my potential and wanted to see me succeed.
  • Took the IELTS exam to satisfy the English language requirement and strengthen my application.

What Did You Pursue After the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?

PhD under the ARC Training Centre in Plant Biosecurity with a Postgraduate Research Stipend Scholarship at James Cook University, Queensland, Australia.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

Reflecting on my application, I believe several elements came together to make it competitive. My motivation letter was more than a formality. It was a genuine articulation of why I was the right candidate for this specific programme. Alongside this, my academic GPA of 8.8/10 demonstrated consistent dedication, while my research experience in sustainable pest management showed I already had relevant exposure to the field. I was also fortunate to have references who didn't just tick a box, but they were people who genuinely invested in my success and communicated that through their recommendations. Together, these elements painted a coherent picture of a candidate who was academically prepared, practically experienced, and deeply motivated.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I could go back and change one thing, I would invest more intentionally in networking with people who have already secured such scholarships. If I had, I could have applied for various other scholarships that I didn’t know existed.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

If you are considering applying for a scholarship like the Erasmus Mundus, here is what I would tell you:

  • Know your and their 'whys' deeply. Spend time reflecting on your own journey, then dig deep into the scholarship’s mission and value. When both “whys” align, let that authenticity shine through!
  • Your motivation letter matters more than you think. Invest significant time into crafting a letter that tells your unique story with clarity and passion.
  • Choose your referees wisely. Seek out mentors who know you well, believe in your potential, and can speak specifically about your strengths.
  • Start networking now and don’t hesitate to ask for help. Build genuine relationships in your field before you even begin applying.
  • Don't underestimate language requirements. If IELTS or TOEFL is required, prepare early and aim high. A strong score signals that you are ready for the academic demands ahead.
  • Most of all, believe that you belong. That mindset can make all the difference.
