My name is Alicia. I was born in Venezuela and raised in Boston, and I’ve always been drawn to work that connects people, culture, and community. I pursued a Bachelor of Science in Public Health and Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst because I’ve always believed that understanding systems, health, policy, and community structures helps us build more equitable environments.

After graduating, I decided to continue my education and earned an International Master’s Program in International Studies from National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan. I wanted to experience the world beyond my own surroundings, immerse myself in a new culture, and deepen my understanding of global health, international development, and cross-cultural collaboration.

I completed my Bachelor of Science in Public Health and Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Throughout undergrad, my coursework in epidemiology, global health, and policy played a significant role in shaping my interest in international work. Studying in Taiwan was one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Living abroad pushed me out of my comfort zone and strengthened my confidence, adaptability, and independence.

NCCU is one of the top universities in Taiwan, especially in social sciences, politics, and international relations. The faculty are knowledgeable, accessible, and deeply engaged in regional and global research. I appreciated the combination of academic rigor and cultural immersion.

How Does the National Chengchi University (NCCU) Support International Students?

The university has strong systems in place for international students, including orientation programs, scholarship resources, visa support, and dedicated staff in the Office of International Cooperation. The IMPIS program and team were like my family, so it always felt like I had support.

Language Questions

Classes in the international program were conducted in English, so not knowing Mandarin did not prevent me from succeeding academically. However, learning basic Mandarin helped with daily life and made it easier to navigate Taiwan respectfully and confidently.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

My combination of personal background and real-world experience helped me stand out. I had experience in community engagement, cultural programming, and program coordination roles that demonstrated leadership, adaptability, and the ability to work across cultures. I also had a clear sense of purpose in my personal statement, showing how the program aligned with both my personal journey and career goals.

What Would You Have Done Differently?

I would have reached out to alumni earlier in the process. Learning from people who had already gone through the program can make a big difference in understanding expectations, preparing documents correctly, and strengthening your application.

What Advice Would You Give to Others Applying for a Similar Scholarship?

Start early, give yourself time to refine your statement, secure strong recommendation letters, and review all requirements carefully. Be clear about your purpose and show how your experiences connect to the program. And don’t be afraid to reach out to schools, admissions offices, or former scholars. These conversations often reveal opportunities and encouragement you may not find online. Most importantly, trust your story. Scholarships often go to people with clarity, grounded motivation, and a willingness to learn not just perfect resumes.
