The Journey

Hey, I’m Aizada. I’m from Kazakhstan. Currently, I am pursuing the Erasmus Mundus Master's degree in Plant Health in Sustainable Cropping Systems. You read correctly, plants also need to be protected. Not just any plants, but agricultural crops that humanity feeds on.

We live in a world where the truth is simple: no plants – no food. Before any innovation or technology, the first and most basic human need is food. That’s why I chose this field—to contribute to sustainable food systems and help protect the plants that feed the world.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Details

I got a privileged scholarship - Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's degree (EMJM). It means that I have an opportunity to learn from two institutions, namely the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) in Spain and the University of Padova in Italy.

Educational Background

I hold a bachelor's degree in Plant Protection and Quarantine. During my studies, I got a chance to spend a semester at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE) in Budapest as an exchange student. I believe experiencing different educational systems and teaching practices sparked an interest in me, and I became curious about continuing studies to get exposed to different educational systems, cultures, and travel.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?

Since I participated in the Erasmus+ + exchange program, I discovered that there is a program for a Master's degree. After a few years of work experience, I was set on getting a master's degree in English. Most of the programs require a language certificate. So, before considering any program, I passed the IELTS exam and prepared my certificate. The higher, the better. In my case, the requirement was above 6.5.

EMJM has a website with programs, and each program has its own website with all necessary information, such as deadlines, eligibility criteria, and required documents. In my case, it was the IELTS certificate, CV, Motivation and Recommendation letters, diploma, and academic transcript.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe it was my previous job experience in my field that gave me a clear understanding of what I want and why I want to pursue this program. A few years ago, right after graduation, I considered applying for this scholarship. However, due to a lack of experience, I had no idea what to write in the motivation letter—or even why I was ready to dedicate several years of my life to this path.

What can also make a big difference is having a unique perspective on science. Yes, we need scientists—but even more, we need enthusiasts who can bridge the gap between disciplines and turn science into something truly multidisciplinary and impactful.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I don’t think I would change anything if I had the chance to go through the process again.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

The clearer you are about what you truly want, the stronger your drive will be, and the better your motivation letters will turn out.

Beyond studies, get involved in internships, learning programs, or any hands-on activities—not just to boost your CV, but to discover what really suits you. These experiences help you grow, refine your goals, and stand out as a focused, committed candidate.
