The Journey
My name is Abdulrahman Hassan, and I am from Egypt. I completed my master’s degree in Theoretical Physics at the University of Göttingen, Germany, after finishing an Erasmus exchange at the University of Paris-Saclay. I chose to pursue advanced studies in physics because I am fascinated by the fundamental laws of nature, particularly in particle physics and cosmology. My goal is to contribute to understanding the universe, including exploring topics like dark matter.
Educational Background
I completed my undergraduate degree in Engineering in Egypt, with a final grade of 70%. During my master’s, I took courses in engineering physics, which strengthened my foundation in theoretical and applied physics. To apply for my master’s program in theoretical physics, I also prepared for and successfully passed the GRE Physics exam. This required self-study in areas I had not previously covered in my undergraduate degree, such as Special Relativity. These experiences prepared me to transition effectively into advanced physics studies.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Göttingen?
I researched German universities offering strong programs in theoretical physics and considered tuition-free public institutions. I prepared by studying for the GRE Physics exam, reviewing topics not covered in my undergraduate curriculum, and ensuring my application demonstrated my academic readiness for the program. No recommendation letters were required, which simplified the process.
Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?
I was offered an Erasmus grant to participate in an exchange program abroad. Other scholarships available for international students in Germany include the Germany and Lower Saxony scholarships. Additionally, Ditib Akademie offers scholarships to Muslim students.
What Drew You to Choose This Country to Pursue Your Degree?
Germany is renowned for high-quality higher education in STEM fields, and tuition-free public universities make it highly accessible for international students. The strong research environment, especially in physics, and opportunities to collaborate with leading scientists were additional motivations for studying here.
What Were Some of the Challenges You Faced as an International Student, Particularly Regarding Living Costs or Part-time Work Opportunities?
Living costs in Lower Saxony have increased in recent years due to reduced state expenditure on academia and students. Finding affordable housing can be challenging, particularly for international students without strong German skills, as entry into state-subsidised student dorms can take a long time. The private housing market is competitive, so early applications are highly recommended.
Part-time work opportunities exist, but they are easier to access with a good command of German. Balancing work and studies requires careful time management, but the university offers career consulting and integration services to support international students.
Looking Back, Would You Recommend Studying Here for International Students Seeking Affordable Higher Education? Why or Why Not?
Yes, absolutely. Germany offers world-class education without tuition fees, making it highly valuable for international students seeking affordable higher education. While living costs and housing require careful planning, the academic quality, research opportunities, and student support services make it a highly rewarding experience. I would recommend improving German language skills before or during studies to facilitate finding side-jobs and integrating into daily life.
How Is (was) Your Experience at the University of Göttingen?
My experience was excellent. I had the chance to learn from experienced professors, engage in research, and collaborate with talented international peers.
How Do You Rate the University of Göttingen Academically and Why?
I rate the university very highly. The courses are rigorous, the research opportunities are strong, and the faculty are internationally active, making it a highly stimulating academic environment.
How Does the University of Göttingen Support International Students?
The university provides career consulting, integration services, and guidance for administrative processes, which significantly help international students adapt.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or German?
Most master’s courses in theoretical physics are conducted in English.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing the Native Language of the Country?
Not significantly for coursework or research, as English is widely used. However, knowing German is very helpful for daily life, administrative matters, and accessing side jobs.
