The Journey

My name is Abasiodiong Moses, and I am from Nigeria. I grew up in a semi-rural city in the southern part of the country. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Genetics and Biotechnology from Akwa Ibom State University, where I graduated as the second-best student in my department. Although I initially had limited knowledge about the course, my interest in biotechnology and molecular biology deepened during my second year. I often visited other institutions to gain hands-on experience in molecular research since my university lacked advanced facilities. My fascination with DNA, genes, and infectious diseases inspired me to pursue a Master’s degree in Biotechnology at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

UNESCO–International Centre for Biotechnology (ICB) Scholarship Details

In 2022, I was awarded the prestigious UNESCO–International Centre for Biotechnology (ICB) Scholarship, valued at over ₦1 million, which fully supported my postgraduate studies at Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO. That same year, I was also offered the University of Bristol Think Big Scholarship, worth £10,000. However, I declined the latter since I was already in the final phase of my Master’s program in Nigeria at the time.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the UNESCO–International Centre for Biotechnology (ICB) Scholarship?

I discovered the UNESCO–ICB scholarship through a Google search. One of the main requirements, aside from standard documentation, was an essay on “Why Biotechnology?” I reflected deeply on my motivation for studying biotechnology, the challenges I faced as a student, and my long-term academic and professional goals. I dedicated several weeks to drafting and refining the essay, with guidance from my academic and career coach, before submission.

For the University of Bristol Think Big Scholarship, I had to submit three separate essays with distinct yet interrelated themes. Balancing essay writing with my ongoing research work was challenging, but I managed it successfully with the support and encouragement of my laboratory partners.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my authenticity and sincerity made my application stand out. I shared my personal story honestly, highlighting my humble beginnings from a rural, riverine community in Nigeria and my determination to excel despite limited resources. In addition, I conducted thorough research to ensure my essays were insightful and well-structured. I believe my narrative resonated with the selection committee, emphasizing the importance of providing opportunities for underprivileged individuals to achieve their potential.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

In hindsight, I would have pursued the University of Bristol Think Big Scholarship to restart my Master’s program abroad. Although I was nearly done with my M.Sc. in Nigeria, studying in an international setting would have offered broader exposure and access to advanced research facilities. I would have also devoted more time to perfecting my essays and possibly aimed for full funding to cover all expenses.

What Advice Would You Give to Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

I strongly encourage aspiring applicants to consider opportunities like the Think Big Scholarship. Such international experiences broaden academic perspectives and foster collaboration with scholars from diverse backgrounds. My advice is to start early, organize your documents, and seek feedback from an academic coach or mentor on your essays and reference letters. Most importantly, remain authentic and persistent; there is no shame in starting over, and every opportunity can be a stepping stone to greater achievements.
