If you are looking to study in Europe without spending a lot of money, then you should consider studying in Romania. The country boasts of low living costs and cheap educational fees. And, like most European countries, its universities and institutions are considered some of the world’s best.

To attract more international students to enroll in the country, the Romanian Government – thru the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education & Research – has offered competitive scholarships that match their EU counterparts. The Romanian Government Scholarship is open to foreigners who wish to take their bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate studies in the vibrant country of Romania.

Romanian Government Scholarship Awards

Romanian Government scholars enjoy numerous award benefits. Primarily, it covers the full tuition amount for 3-6 years for Bachelor’s students, 1-2 years for Master’s students, and 3-5 years for Ph.D. Students. The Romanian Government scholarship, however, does not cover programs in the fields of medicine, dental medicine, and pharmacy.

The government will also shoulder the expenses related to registration, application processing, language testing, admission contests, and aptitude tests.

Scholars (even those undertaking a preparatory year) are also entitled to a monthly stipend, with amounts ranging from EUR 65 to EUR 85 ($80-$105). Financing for accommodations, medical insurance, and local transportation are also covered by the scholarship.

The scholarship will not cover international transportation (from the student’s home country to Romania).

Eligibility Criteria

The Romanian Government Scholarship Awards are open to all foreigners who hail from outside the European Union. However, members of diplomatic/consular corps, as well as staff of Romania-based international organizations, are ineligible to apply for this scholarship.

As for academic requirements, they vary according to the program. For Bachelor’s applicants, a high school diploma is required. Master’s students need to have a baccalaureate degree, while Doctorate students need a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree to apply.

Proficiency in Romanian is also required, especially for Bachelor’s and Master’s students since these programs are only taught in Romanian. Successful applicants, however, may work on their skills by undergoing a preparatory year before their actual studies.

At the same time, scholars who demonstrate proficiency in Romanian may be exempt from the preparatory year requirement if they finished it prior or if they have proof of competence (B1 level).

As for Ph.D. students, proficiency in Romanian is not required especially if they gain admission to schools that have English- or French-taught programs.

How to Apply to Romanian Government Scholarships

Aspiring Romanian Government scholars need to follow these application procedures.

1. Prepare the necessary documents.

To apply for Romanian Government Scholarship, the student must download the application form found on the official website. He/she must also prepare the other documentary requirements, such as copies of the diploma/s, transcripts, and birth certificate. All of these must be translated to English, French, or Romanian.

Applicants also need to submit a copy of the passport page and a curriculum vitae in English or French (this should follow the scholarship’s prescribed format).

Additionally, doctorate applicants need to prepare a letter of intent in either English, French, or Romanian.

In certain cases, applicants may be required to submit other documents, such as proof of name change or certificate of passing. The latter is for those who haven’t received their diplomas yet.

Applicants in their final year of studies must submit a certification and transcripts attesting such upon application.

Students aged 18 years old and below need to prepare a notarized parental consent as well.

2. Submit the requirements.

Applicants are encouraged to submit the requirements electronically, they though may do so physically as well.

The above-mentioned requirements should be sent to the diplomatic Romanian mission in the student’s home country before April 30. Documents forwarded directly to the Ministry of Foreign Affair or the Ministry of Education & Research will not be accepted.

3. Wait for the results.

Students who win the award are informed on the same date every year: July 15.

The notification will come from the Ministry of Education & Research, which will send a ‘Letter of Acceptance for Studies in Romania.’ This document usually indicates the need for preparatory year education – and the university where the student has been accepted. The letter will then be forwarded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the diplomatic mission of the student’s home country.

After receiving this letter, the applicant must state his/her desire to accept (or reject) the Romanian Government scholarship. In the case of the former, the student must use this opportunity to request a long-term study visa as well.

In case the student is not accepted in his top program/university choice, the ministry will inform the scholar of the possible alternatives.

Conclusion

All Romanian Government Scholarship recipients are expected to follow the country’s constitution and laws – as well as the university’s/institution’s regulations. Additionally, all scholars must submit a medical certificate stating that the student is free from contagious disease.
