Hungary, located in the center of Europe, is known for its stunning architecture, rich history, and vibrant culture. It’s popular among international students for numerous reasons, including its various educational programs, relatively affordable education, scholarships for foreigners, and safe and welcoming environment. While Hungary’s official language is Hungarian, English is widely recognized and utilized in universities.

Therefore, international students can choose to pursue English-taught programs. However, they must demonstrate academic ability and provide proof of language proficiency during their application process. This article will inform you about the language tests that Hungarian universities require of international students, so read the information carefully.

Language Proficiency Tests Needed in Hungary

Even though Hungarian is the primary language of instruction in Hungary, many universities still offer English programs. Numerous standardized language tests are available to international students in the country. We’ll discuss them in the following sections.

Hungarian Language Tests for International Students

Here are the language proficiency tests commonly taken by international students in Hungary.

1. Hungarian as a Foreign Language Exam (Nyelvvizsga)

The Hungarian as a Foreign Language Exam, or Nyelvvizsga, is a standardized language proficiency test for non-native Hungarian speakers. It is designed to assess the four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening, all in Hungarian. Exam standards are met internationally because these are in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or CEFR.

Numerous reputable tests are available, including the ECL, which assesses four levels: A2, B1, B2, and C1. Required minimum scores vary across universities and programs, with a B2 or C1 CEFR level being the most common in Hungarian schools. An institution that provides Hungarian-taught programs includes the University of Szeged, which requires a C1 proficiency in Hungarian for admission.

2. TestDaF (Test of German as a Foreign Language)

TestDaF is a standardized language assessment used by individuals pursuing study or work in German-speaking countries. However, it can also be taken by international students in Hungary. It evaluates the German language skills of non-native speakers, specifically in an academic context. Language skills assessed include writing, speaking, listening comprehension, and reading comprehension.

Many universities in Hungary that provide German-taught programs accept TestDaF scores to prove language proficiency. Minimum required scores may vary, but a level TDN 4 score is typically accepted. For instance, Eötvös Loránd University requires a CEFR B2 level in German, which is equivalent to levels TDN 3 or TDN 4. Meanwhile, the University of Pécs requires an intermediate level of German proficiency.

3. TCF (Test de connaissance du français)

The Test de connaissance du français, or TCF, is a famous language proficiency test used by non-native French speakers seeking to study or work in French-speaking countries. It assesses language skills like writing, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and speaking in professional and academic contexts. With several universities in Hungary providing French-taught programs, students use language proficiency tests like TAF to gain admission.

Minimum scores accepted by universities may vary. However, a B2-level score is generally accepted for undergraduate-level programs. For instance, the University of Debrecen’s B.A. Romance Philology and Cultures (French Studies) program accepts B2 French language proficiency. On the other hand, Eötvös Loránd University requires a C1 level proficiency for its master’s program on French language, literature, and culture.

English Language Tests for International Students

Here are three famous and commonly used English language proficiency tests in Hungary.

1. IELTS – International English Language Testing System

The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is a famous English proficiency test recognized worldwide. Educational institutions around the world use it for academic and immigration purposes. It evaluates the four language skills in English. The minimum IELTS requirement depends on the university and program, with most Hungarian universities accepting a band score of 6.0 to 7.0.

For instance, Central European University requires an overall band score of 6.5. Moreover, Hungarian higher institutions like Eötvös Loránd University accept a lower IELTS band score of 5.5 for specific programs.

2. TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language

Another globally recognized language test for international students that assesses English proficiency is the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). It is used for both immigration and academic purposes and assesses all four language skills. It comes in two formats: paper-based (PBT) and internet-based (iBT).

Most universities’ minimum accepted TOEFL score is 80 to 100 on TOEFL iBT. For example, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics agrees with a minimum iBT score of 80, while the Corvinus University requires a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 100.

3. DET – Duolingo English Test

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online test that has recently gained popularity as a convenient alternative to traditional language tests. It assesses the four language skills, and the scores range from 10 to 160. Most Hungarian universities now recognize it as a means to prove proficiency in English.

Minimum scores depend on the university and program, with most institutions accepting scores between 95 and 120. Universities in Hungary that accept DET include Corvinus University of Budapest and Central European University.

While most Hungarian universities provide English-taught programs, some also offer programs in other languages like German and French. Thus, language tests for international students in Hungary may be required of individuals interested in pursuing higher studies in the country. They assure institutions that the students possess the necessary skills to excel in all academic activities.
