Austria is located in Central Europe. It is a popular study-abroad destination for international students because it has a diverse higher education landscape and consistently high educational standards. It also offers a vibrant cultural scene, rich history, and scenic landscapes, making it an exciting location to study and live in.

Austria’s official language is German, which gives international students an excellent opportunity to learn a new language. However, many Austrian universities and higher education institutions also offer English-taught programs, especially at the master’s and doctoral levels. For international students interested in pursuing higher studies in this country, this article gives valuable information on German and English language tests accepted by Austrian universities.

Language Proficiency Tests Needed in Austria

Language requirements for international students in Austria usually depend on the language of instruction of the chosen program. German-taught programs generally require proof of German proficiency, while English-taught programs generally require proof of English proficiency.

German Language Tests for International Students

Here are two popular German proficiency tests for international students in Austria.

1. TestDaF – Test of German as a Foreign Language

TestDaF is a language proficiency test for non-native German speakers. This test assesses an individual’s ability to understand and use German in study-related and academic contexts. The TestDaF, like many other proficiency tests, evaluates German reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills. TestDaF results are reported as TestDaF levels, commonly TDN 3, TDN 4, and TDN 5.

The required TestDaF level depends on the university and program. For German-taught degree programs that require C1-level German, a common benchmark is TestDaF level 4 in all parts. For instance, the University of Vienna recognizes TestDaF at least level 4 in all parts as proof of C1 German proficiency. However, requirements vary. The University of Innsbruck requires B2-level German for most German-taught programs at admission and accepts TestDaF level 3 in all parts for this B2 requirement, although some programs may require C1.

2. ÖSD – Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch

Another proficiency test that assesses German as a foreign language is the ÖSD. It evaluates a non-native German speaker’s ability to understand and use the language in a variety of contexts. ÖSD exams are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and include reading, listening, writing, and speaking components, either as separate modules or as written and oral modules depending on the exam level.

The minimum accepted ÖSD level depends on the university, program, and language of instruction. Many Austrian universities accept ÖSD certificates as proof of German proficiency. For example, the University of Innsbruck accepts ÖSD Certificate B2 for most German-taught programs at admission, while the University of Graz requires C1-level German to start German-taught degree programs and lists ÖSD C1 as an accepted certificate.

English Language Tests for International Students

Here are three English proficiency tests for international students that are accepted by some Austrian universities.

1. IELTS – International English Language Testing System

IELTS is a globally accepted English language test for international students. The Academic test assesses listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. The IELTS is accepted by many universities in Austria for English-taught programs.

The minimum IELTS score is decided by the university and can vary depending on the program. For B2-level English, some universities list IELTS scores around 6.0 or 6.5, while C1-level programs may require higher scores. For example, the University of Vienna lists IELTS Academic 6.5 for B2-level English proof and IELTS Academic 8.0 for C1-level English proof. The University of Graz requires IELTS Academic 7.0 for English-taught master’s programs.

2. TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language

TOEFL is another widely accepted standardized English language test for international students. It is used to provide proof of English proficiency and helps universities assess an applicant’s ability to study in English. The TOEFL iBT test assesses reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills.

The minimum required score for TOEFL varies depending on the university and program. Current examples include Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, which recommends TOEFL iBT 87 as a B2-level benchmark for incoming students, and Vienna University of Economics and Business, which lists TOEFL 85 for its English-taught bachelor’s program and TOEFL 100 for English-taught master’s programs.

3. DET – Duolingo English Test

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online English proficiency test. It reports an overall score and subscores related to speaking, writing, reading, listening, literacy, comprehension, conversation, and production.

This test can be taken online and may be accepted as an alternative to traditional English proficiency tests such as IELTS or TOEFL. However, DET is not accepted by every Austrian university, so students should always check the official admissions page for their chosen program. One Austrian institution that accepts DET is Webster Vienna Private University, which lists a DET score of 110 for undergraduate applicants and 120 for graduate applicants, with an additional interview and well-written applicant essay required for the graduate DET route.

International students applying to an Austrian university will usually be required to provide proof of language proficiency in German or English, depending on the language of instruction of the program. Specific language tests needed by a foreign learner in Austria will depend on the desired university and program. Being aware of your entry requirements is therefore essential before taking any test.
