University of Giessen FAQ

Are there any scholarships at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) that are for online courses?

JLU’s scholarships are generally tied to being enrolled as a JLU student (rather than being “online-only scholarships”).

Are courses taught at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) in English or in German?

Both exist, but it depends on the degree: many programmes at JLU (especially undergraduate and state-examination tracks) are in German, while a number of Master’s programmes are taught in English (and each degree page will list the language requirements). In the scholarship story, Evi Mariana says, “Both my Master’s and PhD programs are conducted in English,” but she also adds that “the ability to communicate in German is also important for daily life and dealing with administrative matters.”

Is there age limit to get scholarships at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU)?

Most JLU-linked scholarships do not publish a blanket age limit; eligibility is usually based on your study status (e.g., being enrolled, being within the standard period of study, or being in the final phase of your degree) plus merit/need criteria. A good real-world signal is Evi Mariana, who applied while already in her career and mentions she “was working full-time” during IELTS prep, so scholarships can fit non-traditional timelines. That said, some external funders (including certain DAAD lines) can have their own profile expectations (work experience, target groups), so always check the specific call.

For which subjects does Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) offer scholarships for?

Most JLU scholarships are not restricted to one subject area. They are open across degree programmes (with rules like “no doctoral programmes” for some scholarships). That means students in medicine, engineering, business, STEM, and humanities can all be eligible, as long as they meet the scholarship’s conditions. JLU also explicitly groups medicine under its state-examination programmes (along with law and teaching degrees), so medicine students are typically part of the same scholarship ecosystem once enrolled. For international applicants specifically interested in human medicine: admission is highly competitive, and JLU’s medical admissions information for the non-German quota highlights German test results (e.g., TestDaF/DSH) as part of the application package, so medicine is not a “start in English” route even if scholarships exist once you are studying.

For which nationalities does Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) offer scholarships for?

It depends on the scholarship type. The Deutschlandstipendium at JLU is framed around being enrolled at JLU (or enrolling soon) rather than restricting by nationality, while JLU International Office scholarships are specifically aimed at “international students” (and international doctoral candidates) who meet the call criteria. External scholarships can be more nationality- or region-targeted: in the recipient story, Evi Mariana is from Indonesia and received DAAD EPOS funding, which is designed for specific target groups and typically supports study/research in Germany.

Is having language proficiency test necessary (IELTS, TOEFL, DSH, TestDaF, etc) for Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU)?

Often yes, because JLU requires proof that you can study in the language of your programme. If your degree is taught in English, the degree page will list accepted English proofs (IELTS/TOEFL, etc.); if your degree is taught in German, you’ll normally need German proof (like DSH/TestDaF or equivalent). In the scholarship story, Evi Mariana explains, “I needed to take the IELTS test,” and she adds she prepared by “consistent self-study.

Is there minimum grade for acceptance at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU)?

It depends on the programme. Some programmes set a clear minimum (for example, JLU’s M.Sc. Sustainable Transition lists a “minimum grade of 2.6” in the German grading system), while other programmes may be capacity-limited (NC) or rank applicants using several components. For medicine in the non-German quota, JLU describes a points-based ranking that includes your university entrance qualification grade plus language-test results (and potentially TestAS and a motivation letter).

What is a good academic background to get a scholarship at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU)?

A strong profile at JLU usually combines excellent academics with clear motivation and evidence of engagement. For the Deutschlandstipendium, JLU explicitly looks at “excellent academic achievement,” plus “special (social) commitment and personal success,” and it can consider personal challenges/obstacles. The personal “why” matters a lot in practice: Evi Mariana advises applicants to “focus on developing your expertise” and notes it becomes easier to write a convincing motivation letter when you have “a clear and practical reason” that the scholarship will strengthen your professional capacity.

What documents do I need to apply for Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU)?

It depends on whether you mean admission to a degree programme. For degree admissions, you need proof of language proficiency (German and/or English depending on programme), a passport ID-page copy, and proof you paid uni-assist so they can process your file (plus the usual academic records required by your programme/level). Evi Mariana emphasizes that beyond “administrative requirements,” your documents should show a coherent story, especially in the motivation letter, so reviewers can clearly see why the scholarship fits your plan.

Is there an application fee at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU)?

For the application itself, JLU often routes international applications through uni-assist, and in that pathway you pay uni-assist handling fees (JLU notes your documents can only be processed after you transfer the administrative fee to uni-assist). So, many applicants experience “no university application fee,” but they do pay (1) uni-assist processing fees (if using uni-assist). Check the latest guidelines for updated information.

    Dear sir,

I’m an international student. I want to complete my graduate degree in political science / international Relation. Is it possible to complete my degree from University of Giessen? My IELTS score is 6.

If you take a look at their Master’s courses page, they don’t have the exact majors named “political science” or “international relations” but they do have something similar. You will need German proficiency scores if it is taught in German, and probably a higher IELTS score if it’s taught in English.
